Casing running & cementing
9‑5/8" or 7" casing strings
Top drive with casing running tool
Platform abandonment
Pulling all tubing, cutting casing, setting plugs
Full workover + light drilling in one package
Not suitable for: Deep drilling beyond 3,500m in hard rock, or heavy drilling with large bits (>12‑1/4"). For that, you need a dedicated drilling rig like our SJF450DB.
Best fit platforms:
-
Large fixed platforms with 25‑30 ton crane capacity
-
Fields with deep reservoirs (4,000‑5,500m)
-
Platforms originally designed for drilling but now used only for workover – the SHXJ225 is lighter than most original drilling rigs
-
Operators who want to eliminate the workover barge and have a permanent heavy intervention solution

OEM Customization – Tailored to Heavy Duty Requirements
Because the SHXJ225 is often used in non‑standard ways (light drilling, batch work, deep intervention), we offer extensive customization.

Our Engineering Solution
"Our platform crane is 20 tons, not 25”
Split the drawworks into two separate modules: motor + gearbox (12t) and drum (9t). Mast into 4 sections (5‑6t each). Total modules: 15, heaviest 12t.
"We want to drill 12‑1/4" holes to 2,500m”
Upgrade mud pump capacity (add a second 1,600 hp pump skid). Reinforce mast for higher rotary torque.
"We need to handle 13‑3/8" casing”
Larger rotary table (27‑1/2" opening), taller mast (42m) – special order.
"Platform has 380V only – no 690V”
Add 380V‑to‑690V step‑up transformer (2.5 tons). Or rewind all motors for 380V (longer lead time).
"We want to use the rig for P&A on 20 wells”
Add automated pipe handling (iron roughneck, pipe racking system) to speed up repetitive tripping.
"We have no crane at all – just a helideck”
This is extreme – but we designed a self‑erecting version with a hydraulic davit that can lift all modules from a supply boat. Requires calm seas.
Lead time for custom SHXJ225:
-
Standard (no module splitting): 9‑10 months
-
With module splitting (for lower crane capacity): 11‑12 months
-
With extra drilling equipment (mud pumps, etc.): 12‑14 months
Why Choose SJ for the SHXJ225?
Reason
Why It Matters for Heavy Workover
Decades of heavy rig experience
We’ve built over 500 workover rigs and 100+ drilling rigs. The SHXJ225 borrows mast design from our SJF315 drilling rig – proven and robust.
Field‑proven in deep wells
Multiple SHXJ225 units have worked in the South China Sea (water depth 200m+ platform) and Middle East (5,500m wells).
Top drive expertise
We manufacture our own AC VFD top drives (licensed technology). That means single‑source responsibility – no finger pointing between rig builder and top drive supplier.
Heavy load testing
Every SHXJ225 is load tested to 110% of rated hook load at our 750‑ton test stand. You’re welcome to witness.
Global service network
SHXJ225 spares stocked in Houston, Dubai, and Singapore. Our heavy rig specialists are available for on‑site commissioning and emergency support.
Sinopec group support
Financial stability, access to group‑wide technical resources, and a track record of delivering large projects on time.

Customer quote (real, paraphrased):
"We bid out a requirement for a 2,200 kN workover rig to four suppliers. SJ was not the cheapest, but they were the only one who did a site visit to our platform before quoting. The rig they delivered required zero deck reinforcement – something the others said was impossible.” – Project manager, Middle East offshore field.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q1: Is the SHXJ225 a workover rig or a drilling rig?
A: Legally and by API definition, it’s a workover rig (rated for hoisting, not full drilling loads). But practically, it can do light drilling – sidetracks, deepening, batch drilling of new wells up to 2,500‑3,000m. If you need to drill 4,000m+ new wells from scratch, look at SJF450DB.
Q2: What crane capacity do I need on my platform?
A: Standard SHXJ225 requires a platform crane capable of lifting 25 tons (for the heaviest module). If your crane is only 20 tons, we can split modules further – but that increases rig‑up time and number of lifts. Minimum possible with extreme splitting: 15 tons (but you’ll have 18+ modules).
Q3: Does the top drive come standard? Really?
A: Yes – the SHXJ225 includes a full AC VFD top drive as standard equipment, with pipe handler (single joint). No extra cost line item. This is a major value difference from competitors who treat top drive as an expensive option.
Q4: Can I run this rig without platform power?
A: No – the SHXJ225 requires platform AC power (600V or 690V, 800 kVA). If your platform has insufficient generation, we can supply a separate power module (diesel generator skid, about 25 tons – needs its own deck space). But honestly, if you have no platform power, a hydraulic rig like HXJ135 is a better fit.
Q5: What’s the maximum well depth for workover?
A: For 2‑7/8" tubing, we’ve done 6,000m (19,700 ft). For 3‑1/2" tubing, about 4,800m. For heavy drill pipe work, stay under 4,000m. Contact us for a specific depth vs. hook load curve.
Q6: How long does it take to rig up?
A: With a 4‑person crew and platform crane available: 3‑4 days from modules on deck to first job. With extreme module splitting (18+ modules): 5‑6 days. If you have a permanent skid base and keep the rig on platform, rig‑up is one‑time.
Q7: What kind of warranty?
A: 18 months from shipment or 12 months from commissioning (whichever first). Top drive components: 24 months. We offer extended warranty up to 5 years on major structural components (mast, substructure) for an additional fee.
Q8: Do you provide operator training?
A: Yes – 2 weeks on‑site training (classroom + hands‑on) for up to 8 crew members, including top drive operation and basic troubleshooting. We also offer advanced training at our Jingzhou facility with a full‑scale simulator.
Q9: Can the SHXJ225 be moved to another platform?
A: Yes – it’s modular. A full teardown, transport, and rig‑up on a different platform takes about 2‑3 weeks. However, at this size, most operators keep the rig permanently on one platform and use it as a "resident” workover unit.
