Applications
Offshore oil drilling equipment from SJ is used across the full spectrum of deepwater and shallow‑water drilling:
1. Deepwater Drillships & Semi‑Submersibles
Floating rigs require full riser systems, subsea BOP stacks, and motion compensation. Our equipment is deployed on sixth‑generation drillships operating in water depths of 7,500–10,000 ft.
2. Jack‑Up Rigs (Surface BOP with Riser)
Jack‑ups use shorter risers (usually 20″ or 26″) to connect the surface BOP to the wellhead. We supply jack‑up riser systems with quick‑connect flanges and diverter assemblies.
3. Tension Leg Platforms (TLPs) & Spars
Fixed floating platforms often have top‑tensioned risers (TTRs). Our riser joints and tensioners are used on TLP developments for production drilling.
4. Riserless Drilling (Top Hole)
During the initial top‑hole section (before BOP installation), operators may drill riserless. Our diverter system and mud return line equipment handle returns to the rig.
5. Subsea Well Intervention
For light well intervention (coiled tubing or wireline) from a floating vessel, our subsea BOP stack and lower riser package (LRP) provide pressure control.
6. Decommissioning & P&A (Plug & Abandonment)
Removing subsea wellheads and cutting risers requires specialized handling tools. Our subsea wellhead retrieval tools and riser cutters are used in decommissioning projects.

Why Choose SJ Petroleum Machinery?
1. Sinopec‑Owned – Designed by an Operator
SJ is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sinopec, which operates one of the world’s largest offshore drilling fleets. Our offshore equipment is field‑proven on Sinopec’s own deepwater rigs in the South China Sea before it ever reaches an outside customer.
2. 80+ Years of Marine Engineering
We’ve been building offshore drilling equipment since the 1970s (first jack‑up rig delivered 1978). That’s nearly five decades of marine riser, BOP, and tensioner design, with continuous improvement based on real fatigue failures, connector leaks, and handling issues.
3. Full API & Classification Compliance
API 16F, 16A, 17D, 17G – we hold them all. Plus ABS, DNV, and CCS classification. Our equipment meets the most stringent offshore regulatory requirements, including NORSOK for North Sea.
4. In‑House Manufacturing of Critical Components
We forge our own connector bodies, machine our own BOP parts, and assemble our own MUX control pods. No outsourcing of pressure‑containing components. That means full traceability and shorter lead times.
5. Global Support & Spare Parts
Offshore operations can’t wait for parts. We maintain regional inventory of riser gaskets, BOP rams, control pod valves, and tensioner seals in Houston, Aberdeen, Dubai, Singapore, and Jingzhou. Spare parts ship within 24–48 hours.
6. Shorter Lead Times Than Western Competitors
Typical lead time for a complete 10,000‑ft riser string: 8–12 months. Subsea BOP stack: 10–14 months. Tensioner system: 6–8 months. That’s often 30% faster than major Western brands.
7. Custom Engineering for Unusual Water Depths
Need a riser system for 12,000 ft water depth? A BOP stack with special ram configurations? Our engineering team can design, analyze (fatigue, buckling), and certify custom equipment. No project is too deep or too complex.
8. Life‑of‑Field Support
We don’t just sell and leave. We offer long‑term service agreements: annual inspection of riser components, BOP recertification, tensioner refurbishment, and ROV panel upgrades. Our field service engineers are offshore‑trained and available worldwide.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q1: What’s the difference between a marine riser and a drilling riser?
Same thing – marine drilling riser is the full assembly connecting the subsea BOP to the rig. It includes the main tube, auxiliary lines (choke/kill/boost/hydraulic), and buoyancy modules. Some people call it a "drilling riser” to distinguish it from production risers. Yes, SJ supplies both.
Q2: How do you prevent riser fatigue failure?
We design each joint to API RP 2RD with a target fatigue life of 2×10⁶ cycles. We use:
-
Welded vs. threaded connectors (welded are more fatigue‑resistant)
-
Stress relief heat treatment after welding
-
Inconel 625 clad at critical weld toes
-
Regular inspection with ultrasonic phased array (PAUT)
We also provide fatigue monitoring systems (strain gauges, motion sensors) as an option.
Q3: Can your subsea BOP stack be controlled from an existing rig control system?
Yes. Our MUX control pod communicates using standard protocols (Modbus TCP, CANbus) to your existing BOP control panel. If you have a NOV or Cameron system, we can make the interface. If you prefer a standalone SJ control cabin, we supply that too – with joysticks, touchscreens, and full data logging.
Q4: How long does it take to run a 10,000‑ft riser string?
With an experienced crew and our handling tools, the industry average is 60–90 seconds per joint. For 200 joints (10,000 ft / 50‑ft joints), that’s approximately 4–5 hours of running time, plus BOP deployment (2–4 hours). Our quick‑connect dog connectors are about 20% faster than flanged connectors.
Q5: What certifications do you include with a subsea BOP stack?
For every stack, we supply:
-
API 16A Certificate of Compliance (with monogram)
-
Material test reports (heat number traceable for all pressure‑containing parts)
-
NDT reports (UT, MT, PT)
-
Pressure test reports (hydrotest to 1.5× working pressure)
-
Function test report (all rams, connectors, valves)
-
ABS/DNV classification (upon request, additional lead time)
Q6: Do you offer ROV intervention panels that fit existing ROV models?
Yes. Our standard panel is designed for Schilling (now Forum) and Seaeye ROV hot‑stabs. We can also customize for FMC, Saab, or any other ROV. The panel includes labeled ports for BOP functions, choke/kill valves, and connectors.
Q7: What’s your warranty on offshore drilling equipment?
Standard: 18 months from shipment or 12 months from commissioning (whichever comes first). For subsea equipment, we extend the warranty to 24 months because of the long lead time to reach the seafloor. Extended warranties up to 5 years are available.
