Applications
Subsea oil drilling pressure equipment from SJ is deployed across the full range of deepwater operations:
1. Deepwater Exploration Drilling (10,000+ ft)
Frontier basins require reliable subsea BOPs and wellheads. Our equipment is used on 6th‑generation drillships in the Gulf of Mexico, South China Sea, and offshore Brazil.
2. Subsea Development (Tie‑Back to Fixed Platform)
For subsea wells tied back to a platform, our wellhead housing accepts production trees after drilling. We supply the transition adapters.
3. HPHT Subsea Wells (20,000 psi, 350°F)
High‑pressure, high‑temperature reservoirs demand special materials (Alloy 718, super duplex). Our 20k psi subsea BOP stack and wellhead system are available with full qualification testing.
4. Riserless Drilling (Top Hole Section)
During initial top‑hole drilling (before BOP is run), we supply mud return line equipment and diverter systems that interface with the subsea wellhead.
5. Subsea Well Intervention (Light & Heavy)
For workover operations from a floating vessel, our subsea BOP stack and lower riser package (LRP) provide pressure control for coiled tubing or snubbing.
6. Decommissioning & Well Abandonment
Retrieving old subsea wellheads requires specialized tools – our subsea wellhead retrieval tool (hydraulic or mechanical) pulls the housing and casing hangers for permanent abandonment.

Why Choose SJ Petroleum Machinery?
1. Sinopec‑Owned – Proven in the Deepwater South China Sea
SJ is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sinopec, which operates deepwater drillships and semi‑submersibles. Our subsea pressure equipment has been deployed in water depths up to 8,000 ft for Sinopec’s own exploration campaigns. That’s real field validation, not just design papers.
2. 80+ Years of Pressure Control Heritage
Since 1941, we’ve built surface BOPs, wellheads, and valves. Since 1995, subsea. Four decades of deepwater experience means we understand the unique challenges: seawater hydrostatic pressure, low temperatures at seabed, ROV intervention, and multi‑year subsea life.
3. Full API & Classification Certification
We hold API 17D, 16A, 17G, NACE MR0175, and ISO 9001. Our subsea equipment is optionally certified by ABS, DNV, or CCS. For projects requiring BV or Lloyd’s, we can provide as well.
4. In‑House Cladding & Forging
We operate our own forge shop and Inconel 625 cladding line. That means we control the metallurgy from the raw billet to the finished housing. No outsourcing means full traceability and much shorter lead times.
5. Shorter Lead Times Than Major Competitors
Typical lead time for a complete subsea BOP stack (18‑3/4″, 15k psi) is 10–14 months. For wellhead housing and hangers: 6–8 months. Competitors often quote 18–24 months. Expedited options available for critical projects.
6. Global Spares & ROV Tooling Support
We stock subsea‑rated spare parts (seals, SPM valves, ROV hot‑stab tips, connector dogs) in Houston, Singapore, Aberdeen, and Jingzhou. We also supply ROV torque tools and running tools for wellhead systems.
7. Subsea Lifecycle Services
We don’t just deliver the equipment. We offer:
-
5‑year or 10‑year recertification (BOP stack and wellhead)
-
On‑site subsea intervention supervision (our engineers offshore)
-
Remote diagnostics via MUX pod telemetry
-
ROV pilot training for your intervention panel
8. Custom Engineering for Non‑Standard Depths & Pressures
Need a 20,000 psi stack for a 12,000 ft water depth? An 11″ bore wellhead for small subsea trees? Our engineers will design, analyze, and certify. No project is too deep or too high pressure.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q1: What water depth can your subsea BOP stack handle?
Our standard subsea BOP stack is rated for 10,000 ft water depth. With upgraded buoyancy, thicker wall components, and deepwater‑rated control pod electronics, we can extend to 12,000 ft. For depths beyond 12,000 ft, we collaborate with subsea specialists for custom engineering.
Q2: How do you ensure the subsea BOP will shear and seal on large drill pipe?
We test every shear ram to API 16A Appendix F. Our blind/shear rams (18‑3/4″, 15k psi) have successfully sheared 6‑5/8″ S‑135 drill pipe, 5‑1/2″ heavy weight, and 9‑5/8″ casing (with specific ram geometry). We provide shear test reports for your specific pipe sizes before shipment.
Q3: Can your subsea wellhead accept a third‑party production tree?
Yes. Our wellhead housing is designed to API 17D mandrel profile, which is industry‑standard. Most major tree manufacturers (Cameron, FMC, GE) have connectors that fit our profile. If you have a specific tree model, send us the interface drawing – we’ll confirm compatibility or provide an adapter.
Q4: How often does the subsea BOP need to be retrieved for maintenance?
Industry practice: retrieve the BOP stack every 3–5 years or after a major well event. The stack comes to surface for:
-
Shear ram replacement (after shearing)
-
Seal replacement (annular elements every 2–3 years)
-
Accumulator bottle hydrostatic test (every 5 years)
-
Control pod refurbishment (electronics and valves)
SJ provides complete stack retrieval and recertification services.
Q5: What happens if the MUX control pod fails? Can ROV intervene?
Yes – that’s why we include a full ROV intervention panel on every stack. The ROV can hot‑stab into the panel (using standard 3,000 psi hydraulic supply) and individually operate each BOP function (annular close, ram close, connector unlatch). We train your ROV pilots on the panel layout. The MUX pod itself is retrievable by ROV and can be replaced with a spare in a single dive.
Q6: Do you provide subsea accumulator bottles that meet API 16A?
Yes. Our accumulator bottles are ASME Section VIII, Div. 1 certified and qualified to API 16A. Each bottle is serialized with a stamped pressure rating and test date. We supply the entire accumulator skid with pre‑charged nitrogen (shipped at reduced precharge for transportation).
Q7: What certifications do you include with a subsea wellhead system?
For every wellhead housing and casing hanger, we provide:
-
API 17D Certificate of Compliance (monogram)
-
Material test reports (heat‑number traceable to forged billet)
-
Cladding thickness verification (UT measurement)
-
Hardness test records (≤ 22 HRC for NACE)
-
Dimensional inspection report
-
Pressure test certificate (housing test port)
For offshore classification (ABS or DNV), we add third‑party witness inspection and final classification certificate.
Q8: What’s your lead time for a replacement subsea annular BOP element?
A spare sealing element for our 18‑3/4″ annular BOP is typically in stock and ships within 48 hours. For non‑standard elastomers (low‑temp or high‑temp), lead time is 4–6 weeks.
