Key Technical Advantages – Why SJ Control Elements Perform Better

1. API 6A & 16C Certified – With Full Traceability

Every control element we manufacture carries the API monogram where applicable. We maintain API 6A (wellhead equipment) and API 16C (choke and kill manifolds) certifications. More importantly, every component has a traceable serial number linked to:

  • Raw material mill certificate (heat number)

  • In-process inspection records (dimensional, NDE)

  • Pressure test results (1.5x working pressure)

  • Final assembly records

When your quality inspector asks for documentation, we provide a complete package – not a summary sheet.

2. Interchangeable with Industry-Standard Components

SJ control elements are designed to be drop-in replacements for major international brands. Our plug valves use standard bore sizes and face-to-face dimensions. Our choke valves have interchangeable trim components. Our gate valves bolt up to API 6A flanges with standard stud patterns.

This means you’re not locked into SJ for spares. But if you do choose us, you’ll find the fit and function identical to what you’re used to.

3. Material Options for Any Service Condition

Standard components use AISI 4130/4140 alloy steel, normalized and tempered for high strength and toughness. But we regularly build to special requirements:

Service Condition Material Solution
Sour service (H₂S) NACE MR0175 compliance – hardness controlled, 17-4PH or Inconel trim
High temperature (180°C+) High-temp seals (Viton, Kalrez), special stem packing, body material with creep resistance
Low temperature (-46°C) Impact-tested materials at -46°C, low-temp lubricants, special seal materials
Abrasive fluids (sand-laden frac) Tungsten carbide seats and plugs, hard-faced sealing surfaces
Corrosive fluids (CO₂, brine) 316L stainless steel, duplex stainless steel, Inconel wetted parts

4. Advanced Sealing Technology

SJ control elements use a combination of metal-to-metal primary seals with elastomeric or thermoplastic backup seals. This provides:

  • Metal-to-metal seal: Survives fire, high temperature, and erosion

  • Soft seal: Zero leakage at low differential pressure, extends service life

  • Pressure-energized design: Higher pressure = tighter seal

Our plug valves feature lubricated or non-lubricated designs. For high-cycle applications, we recommend non-lubricated (sleeved) plug valves with PTFE sleeves.

5. Rugged Construction for High Cycle Life

Control elements on fracturing spreads and drilling rigs cycle thousands of times per year. SJ designs for durability:

  • Plug valves: Hard chrome or tungsten carbide coated plugs, replaceable seats

  • Choke valves: Tungsten carbide needle and seat – tested to 500 hours of abrasive sand slurry

  • Gate valves: Full bore, floating seats, rising or non-rising stem

  • Check valves: Piston or swing design with replaceable seals

We publish cycle life data. Ask for our endurance test reports.

6. Remote Operation Ready

All SJ control elements can be fitted with actuators for remote or automated control. We supply complete actuation packages including:

  • Hydraulic, pneumatic, or electric actuators

  • Solenoid valves for on/off control (24V DC, 110V AC)

  • Position indicators (limit switches, 4‑20 mA transmitters)

  • Manual overrides (handwheels or levers) for failsafe operation

  • Pilot control panels for choke valves

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: What is the difference between a "fluid control product” and a "control element”?

A: A "fluid control product” is a broad term covering any component that manages fluid – manifolds, pumps, fittings, and valves. A "control element” specifically refers to the component that performs the active control function: opening, closing, restricting, or relieving flow. Valves, chokes, and relief valves are control elements. Piping, manifolds, and unions are not.

Q2: What API certifications do your control elements carry?

A: Plug valves, gate valves, check valves, and choke valves are API 6A and 16C certified. Relief valves are API 6A certified. We can supply API monogram certification documentation with every order.

Q3: Are your valves interchangeable with [brand name]?

A: Yes – SJ control elements are designed for dimensional and functional interchangeability with leading international brands. Our hammer union ends match industry-standard Fig. 602/1002/1502/2002. Our API flanges conform to API 6A. Our actuation interfaces are standard ISO 5211 or customer-specific.

Q4: What pressure ratings are available?

A: Standard control elements range from 21 MPa (3,000 psi) to 140 MPa (20,000 psi). For specialized applications, we manufacture up to 175 MPa (25,000 psi). Contact us for ratings beyond 140 MPa.

Q5: Can you supply control elements for sour service (H₂S)?

A: Yes – we manufacture NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 compliant control elements. All wetted parts undergo hardness testing (≤22 HRC for carbon steel). We use corrosion-resistant alloys for trim (17-4PH, Inconel, Monel) as required.

Q6: What is the typical lead time for control elements?

A: Standard stock items (common sizes, materials, pressure ratings): 2–4 weeks. Engineered-to-order (custom materials, non-standard sizes, sour service): 8–12 weeks. Large quantities (100+ units): 12–16 weeks.

Q7: Do you provide actuators and control systems?

A: Yes – we manufacture hydraulic, pneumatic, and electric actuators. We also supply complete control panels for BOP systems, choke & kill manifolds, and fracturing spreads – including solenoid valves, pressure regulators, and position feedback.

Q8: What documentation do you provide?

A: Standard package includes: material test reports (mill certificates), dimensional inspection report, NDE report (MT, UT, PT as applicable), pressure test certificate (1.5x working pressure), API monogram certificate. Additional documentation (third-party witness reports, NACE compliance, fire test certificates) available on request.

Q9: Can I get a sample for testing?

A: Yes – we can supply sample control elements (plug valve, check valve, or choke valve) for testing and qualification. Sample orders typically 2–4 units. Contact our sales team for sample pricing and lead time.

Q10: How do I get a quote?

A: Email control@sjpetro.com with:

  • Control element type (plug valve, choke valve, gate valve, check valve, relief valve)

  • Pressure rating required (MPa or psi)

  • Size (nominal bore / connection size)

  • End connection type (hammer union Fig. ___, API flange size, threaded NPT, etc.)

  • Material requirements (standard, sour service, high temp, etc.)
