Where These Rigs Are Field-Proven
Fixed platform drilling rigs and lightweight offshore drilling rigs from SJ are active in some of the world's most challenging offshore environments:
-
Fixed production platforms — Drilling new wells from existing platforms without reinforcement
-
Wellhead platforms — Compact intervention and workover on satellite platforms
-
Mature field redevelopment — Infill drilling on platforms with limited remaining deck capacity
-
Bridge-linked platform complexes — Rigs moved between adjacent platforms via skid base
-
Platform decommissioning — P&A operations from platforms near end-of-life
-
FPSO topsides — Lightweight drilling and intervention packages for floating production units
Current field deployments include:
-
Three SJ fixed platform drilling rig sets currently operating in China’s Bohai Bay
-
Exported fixed platform drilling equipment operating in the United States and Malaysia

OEM & Customization — Because Every Platform is Different
Your fixed platform isn’t a generic structure. Neither should your drilling rig be.
SJ offers full OEM and ODM customization for fixed platform and lightweight offshore drilling rigs. We treat every order as a custom engineering project, not a catalog pick.
What we customize — down to the millimeter:
-
Footprint – Reduced to fit between existing platform structures, well bays, and production equipment
-
Deck load distribution – Skid base engineered to spread weight across multiple platform beams, avoiding overstressed areas
-
Mast height – Shortened masts for platforms with overhead crane beams, flare booms, or helicopter decks above
-
Mast clearance – Optimized for your specific BOP stack height and diverter configuration
-
Power integration – Direct from platform gensets, standalone power module, or hybrid configuration
-
Corrosion package – C5-M standard; upgraded to C5-H (high durability) for extreme environments
-
Control system – Si-driller AC-VFD standard; custom interfaces for third-party platform management systems
-
Classification society certification – We manage ABS, DNV, BV, CCS, or your preferred society from start to finish
-
Top drive compatibility – Pre-engineered mounting for NOV, Canrig, Tesco, or our own top drive design
How our custom process works:
-
You provide – Platform deck drawing, well bay layout, available power capacity, desired drilling depth, and casing plan
-
We engineer – Our in-house Research Institute (314 technical staff, including post-doctoral researchers) creates a 3D integration model
-
You approve – We refine until you’re satisfied
-
We build – At our 50,000 m² assembly yard with 24 rig-up positions and 750-ton load test capacity
-
We test – Factory acceptance test (FAT) with you or your third-party surveyor present
-
We deliver – Fully assembled or knocked down for shipment, as you prefer

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q1: What's the difference between SJF fixed platform drilling rigs and SJK jack-up drilling rigs?
A: SJF series is bolted or skid-mounted directly onto fixed production platforms — permanent installations. SJK series is designed for jack-up platforms (self-elevating units). The equipment is similar, but the mounting configurations, substructure designs, and corrosion protection packages are optimized for the different platform types.
Q2: "Lightweight” sounds like it might be weak. How much can your lightweight rig actually lift?
A: Lightweight refers to the equipment’s dead weight, not its capacity. Our lightweight offshore drilling rig delivers the same hook load (up to 4,500 kN / 1,000,000 lbf) as standard designs, but with significantly lower dead weight through high-strength alloys and optimized mast geometries. You get full drilling capability on platforms that can’t support a conventional heavy rig.
Q3: Can you retrofit a fixed platform drilling rig onto an older platform?
A: Yes — and we've done it many times. Older fixed platforms were built to different standards, often with less deck reinforcement. Our engineers calculate deck load capacities from your platform drawings and design a skid base that distributes weight appropriately. If needed, we can reduce mast height, adjust footprint, and lower total dead weight to match your platform's structural limits.
Q4: How small can your fixed platform drilling rig footprint be?
A: Our smallest configuration occupies approximately 12m x 9m (36 ft x 30 ft) including drawworks, mast base, and control house. Even smaller footprints are possible for workover-only packages. Contact us with your well bay dimensions for a feasibility study.
Q5: What certifications can you supply?
A: Base certifications: API 4F (mast & substructure), 7K (drilling equipment), 8C (hoisting). ISO9001, HSE. Upon request, we can obtain ABS, DNV, BV, or CCS certification for the complete package — we handle the survey coordination and documentation.
Q6: Do you provide offshore commissioning and crew training?
A: Absolutely. Our field service engineers sail to your platform for installation supervision, system commissioning, and hands-on crew training. We also offer remote technical support via the Si-driller control system’s telemetry interface.
Q7: What about spare parts availability for offshore locations?
A: We maintain a consigned spares inventory for critical items (drawworks brake pads, hydraulic seals, sensors, control system components). For high-activity campaigns, we can establish a local spares consignment at your onshore base. Major components: 4–8 weeks typical lead time.
Q8: Has SJ fixed platform drilling equipment been exported internationally?
A: Yes. SJ has exported fixed platform drilling rigs to the United States and Malaysia. The larger Sinopec Oilfield Equipment group has exported 297 drilling rigs abroad, including 113 sets to North & South America, 102 sets to Russia, 49 sets to the Middle East and North Africa, and 33 sets to Southeast Asia.
Q9: Can I witness factory acceptance testing before delivery?
A: Yes — and we strongly recommend it. Our 50,000 m² yard and 750-ton load test facility allow full rig-up and proof-loading before shipment. You can bring your own third-party surveyors or use our accredited subsidiary, SJPETRO, for independent verification.
Q10: What is your typical lead time for a fixed platform drilling rig?
A: For a standard SJF series rig with minor customization, 8–10 months. Complete custom engineering (new footprint, reduced mast height, class society certification) may extend to 10–12 months. Contact us with your project schedule for a firm delivery commitment.
