SJF225DB Fixed Platform Drilling Rig

SJF225DB Fixed Platform Drilling Rig

The SJF180DB is a great little rig. The SJF315DB is a serious heavy lifter. But many fixed platform operators find themselves in the middle: they need more reach than a 1,800 kN rig can offer, but they don’t have the deck space or structural margin for a 3,150 kN unit. That’s the precise gap the SJF225DB fills.

2.250 kN – Enough for 4.000 m Drilling, Compact Enough for Tighter Decks:With a maximum hook load of 2.250 kN (500.000 lbf) and drawworks power of 735 kW (1.000 hp), the SJF225DB drills to 4.000 meters (13.120 ft) comfortably. That covers a large percentage of fixed platform development wells and deep workover interventions. Yet the rig’s footprint and dead weight stay within limits that many medium-sized platforms can accept without reinforcement.

Not Just a Bigger SJF180DB – A Different Class of Machine:We didn’t simply scale up the 180. The SJF225DB uses a heavier mast section, larger drawworks drum, and reinforced substructure. The K-type mast height is typically 41–43 meters, giving you more racking capacity and taller stands. The rotary table and BOP clearance are increased to handle larger diameter casing programs. This is a dedicated medium-duty platform rig, not an overstretched light rig.

Where the SJF225DB Delivers Value

This rig is the right answer for a long list of fixed platform scenarios:

  • Medium-depth infill drilling – 4,000 m wells from existing platforms, including deviated and extended-reach

  • Heavy workover & recompletion – Pulling large-diameter production strings, ESP replacements, milling operations

  • Platforms with moderate deck load limits – More capacity than a light rig, but without overstressing older structures

  • Wellhead platform drilling – Satellite platforms where a full-size rig won’t fit but a light rig is underpowered

  • Mature field redevelopment – Drilling infill wells on platforms originally designed for lighter workover loads

  • Plug & abandonment campaigns – Sufficient hook load for pulling long casing strings during decommissioning

Real-world deployments (examples):

  • SJF225DB (and similar SJF series rigs) have been supplied to CNOOC for Bohai Bay fixed platform programs

  • Exported fixed platform drilling rigs of this class to Malaysia and Southeast Asia

  • Used by independent operators in the Middle East for platform drilling campaigns

OEM & Customization – Designed to Fit Your Platform, Not the Other Way Around

Fixed platforms come in all shapes, ages, and conditions. The SJF225DB is a standard design – but we rarely ship one without customizing it to the customer’s specific deck.

What we tailor for you:

  • Footprint & skid geometry – We adjust base dimensions to land on your existing deck beams, avoiding overhangs and weak spots

  • Mast height reduction – For platforms with low overhead clearance (crane beams, flare booms, helidecks), we can lower mast height by up to 5 meters

  • Substructure clearance – Matched exactly to your BOP stack, diverter, and wellhead Christmas tree

  • Deck load distribution – We calculate existing platform capacity from your structural drawings (or as-built sketches) and design skid beams to spread load optimally

  • Power interface – Direct connection to platform generators (custom voltage/frequency) or standalone power skid

  • Top drive integration – Pre-engineered mounts, wiring, and cooling for the brand you specify

  • Corrosion upgrade – C5-M standard; C5-H (high durability) with additional stainless steel and anodic protection for North Sea or tropical ultra-humid environments

  • Classification society – We manage ABS, DNV, BV, CCS certification from application to final stamp

  • Control system integration – Si-driller standard; custom data export to your platform SCADA or remote monitoring center

Our customization process – transparent and engineering-led:

  1. You send us: Platform deck general arrangement (PDF or CAD), well bay layout, available power (kVA, voltage, phase, frequency), target well depth and casing sizes, any overhead clearance constraints.

  2. Our in-house engineering team (314 technical staff, including post-doctoral researchers) builds a 3D integration model showing the rig placed on your deck.

  3. You review – we adjust layout, mast height, skid position until you approve.

  4. We fabricate in our 50,000 m² yard with 24 rig-up positions.

  5. We test – full proof load at our 750-ton offshore commissioning facility. You’re invited to witness FAT on-site or via live video link.

  6. We deliver – fully assembled for tow-out, or knocked down for container shipment.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: How is the SJF225DB different from the SJF180DB?

A: The SJF225DB has 25% more hook load (2,250 kN vs 1,800 kN) and 33% more drawworks power (735 kW vs 550 kW). It drills 1,000 meters deeper (4,000 m vs 3,000 m) and handles larger casing sizes. It also has a taller mast, heavier substructure, and larger rotary table opening. Think of it as a full step up in capability, not just a tweak.

Q2: Our fixed platform was built in the 1990s. Can it take the weight of this rig?

A: Possibly yes – and we’ve done this on several platforms in Bohai Bay and Southeast Asia. Send us your platform’s structural drawings (or as-built sketches if originals are missing). Our engineers will calculate existing deck load capacity and design a skid base that distributes the SJF225DB’s weight across multiple beams. If the platform is truly marginal, we can recommend a lightweight version with reduced dead weight (using higher-strength alloys and a shorter mast). No obligation feasibility study available.

Q3: What’s the smallest footprint you’ve delivered for an SJF225DB?

A: About 11m x 8.5m for a workover-focused configuration with reduced mast height and no top drive. For full drilling with top drive and full pipe racking, figure 13m x 10m. We need your well bay dimensions to give you an exact number.

Q4: Does the rig come with a top drive?

A: The base package is kelly drive. We can integrate a top drive as an option – NOV, Canrig, Tesco, or our own SJ design. The mast comes with pre-drilled mounting points and the control system includes top drive interlocks. Adding a top drive adds about 3–4 months to delivery due to third-party lead times (unless you supply your own top drive).

Q5: Can we use the SJF225DB for workover only, without drilling?

A: Absolutely. In fact, many customers buy this rig primarily for heavy workover (pulling large pumps, milling packers, fishing) and then discover they can drill infill wells with the same unit. The SJF225DB is a true dual-purpose rig – you don’t pay for separate drilling and workover packages.

Q6: What certifications come standard? Can you get DNV?

A: Standard: API 4F (mast & substructure), 7K (drawworks), 8C (hoisting), ISO9001, HSE. For DNV, ABS, BV, or CCS, we obtain certification as an option. We’ve done this for multiple export rigs – allow an additional 2–3 months for class society review and surveys.

Q7: Do you provide offshore commissioning and training?

A: Yes. Our field service team will mobilize to your platform for installation supervision, hook-up, system commissioning, and crew training. Typical on-site duration: 3–4 weeks. We also offer remote support via the Si-driller telemetry system after handover.

Q8: What about spare parts availability – especially for remote platforms?

A: We maintain a consigned spares inventory for high-wear items: drawworks brake pads, hydraulic seals, sensors, VFD control boards, etc. For active long-term campaigns, we can set up a local spares consignment at your onshore supply base. Major components (drawworks drum, mast sections) have 4–8 week lead times.

Q9: We already have a BOP and choke manifold on the platform. Will the SJF225DB connect without replacing them?

A: Almost certainly. Our high-pressure manifolds are fully interchangeable with major global brands (Cameron, NOV, etc.). Send us the make, model, and connection types of your existing equipment. We’ll supply adapters or modify our interfaces to match. We don’t force you to replace serviceable third-party components.

Q10: Can we witness factory acceptance testing?

A: Yes – and we strongly recommend it. Our 750-ton load test facility allows full mast and substructure proof-loading to API 4F. You can bring your own third-party surveyor or use our accredited subsidiary SJPETRO for independent verification. Virtual FAT (live video with remote witness) is also available.

Q11: What is the typical lead time for an SJF225DB?

A: Standard configuration with minor customization (footprint adjustment, standard coating, no class society) – 8–9 months. Full custom (reduced mast height, class society certification, non-standard power) – 10–12 months. Contact us with your target delivery date for a firm schedule.

Q12: Has the SJF225DB been exported outside China?

A: Yes. SJF series rigs (including the 225) have been supplied to Malaysia and Southeast Asia. The broader Sinopec Oilfield Equipment group has exported drilling rigs to the United States, Russia, Middle East, and North Africa. We can provide references upon request (subject to customer approval).
