SJF180DB Fixed Platform Drilling Rig

SJF180DB Fixed Platform Drilling Rig

SJ Petroleum Machinery Co., Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sinopec Oilfield Equipment Corporation, has engineered onshore and offshore drilling solutions for over 70 years. API/ISO/HSE certified, we deliver integrated equipment and services for oil & gas exploration worldwide.

Light Enough for Aging Platforms:Many fixed platforms in mature fields were built decades ago, with deck load ratings far below modern rig weights. The SJF180DB’s lightweight construction — high-strength alloys, optimized mast geometry — keeps dead weight down without sacrificing lifting capacity. We’ve installed these rigs on platforms where a conventional 2.000 hp rig would have required expensive structural reinforcement.

Proven Offshore Pedigree:SJ has been building offshore equipment since 1993. We produced China’s first skid-mounted offshore workover rig. In 1998. we delivered 158-ton drilling workover rigs for two different platforms in Bohai Bay — a project that won a national technology innovation award. The SJF180DB carries that same engineering DNA. Over 40 SJ offshore rigs are currently operating in Chinese and Southeast Asian fields, and the broader Sinopec Oilfield Equipment group has exported 113 rigs to the Americas, 102 to Russia, and 49 to the Middle East and North Africa.

Where the SJF180DB is Currently Working

This rig is a proven workhorse in several offshore settings:

  • Small to medium fixed production platforms – Infill drilling and workover where deck space is limited

  • Mature field redevelopment – Older platforms with lower deck load ratings

  • Wellhead platforms – Satellite platforms without full drilling facilities

  • Bridge-linked platform complexes – Rig skidded between adjacent decks

  • Platform decommissioning (P&A) – Lightweight enough for end-of-life platforms

  • Workover-only campaigns – Heavy intervention without the expense of a larger drilling rig

Current deployment examples:

  • Multiple SJF180DB units operating in Bohai Bay, China (CNOOC fields)

  • Exported fixed platform drilling rigs (including similar SJF series) to Malaysia and the United States

  • Used by independent operators in Southeast Asia for infill drilling programs

OEM & Customization – Built for Your Specific Platform

Fixed platforms are like fingerprints — no two are exactly alike. The SJF180DB is a standard design, but we expect to customize every single one we sell.

What we routinely customize:

  • Footprint geometry – We’ll shrink or reshape the skid base to fit between your platform’s well bays, pipe racks, and production vessels

  • Mast height – Reduced clearance masts for platforms with overhead cranes, flare booms, or helicopter decks above

  • Substructure clearance – Matched exactly to your BOP stack height and diverter configuration

  • Deck load distribution – Skid base engineered to spread weight across your platform’s specific beam layout; we can work with as-built drawings if original structural calculations are unavailable

  • Power source integration – Direct from platform gensets, separate power module, or hybrid; we match your available voltage and frequency

  • Top drive preparation – Pre-drilled mounting points and control wiring for your preferred top drive brand (or we supply our own)

  • Corrosion package – C5-M standard; upgrade to C5-H with additional stainless components for H2S or extreme tropical environments

  • Classification society – We manage ABS, DNV, BV, or CCS certification end-to-end

  • BOP handling – Customized for single or dual-ram BOPs, with local or remote panels

How our custom process works – no surprises:

  1. You send us: Platform deck drawing (PDF or CAD), well bay layout, available power capacity, target drilling depth, and casing program

  2. Our engineers (314-strong team, including post-docs) create a 3D integration model showing exactly how the rig fits on your deck

  3. You review and approve – we adjust until you’re satisfied

  4. We build in our 50,000 m² yard with 24 rig-up positions

  5. We test – full load test up to 750 tons at our offshore commissioning site. You’re invited to witness FAT in person or via live video

  6. We deliver – fully assembled or broken down for shipping, as you prefer

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: Is the SJF180DB strong enough for drilling, or is it just a workover rig?

A: Both. With 1,800 kN hook load and 550 kW drawworks, it’s a full drilling rig rated to 3,000 meters. But it’s also an excellent heavy workover rig. Many customers buy it primarily for workover, then discover they can drill infill wells with the same unit. That’s the point of the dual-purpose design.

Q2: Our platform deck was built in 1985 and has load limitations. Can you still install this rig?

A: Possibly yes — and this is exactly why we built the SJF180DB. Send us your platform structural drawings (or as-built sketches if original drawings are lost). Our engineers will calculate existing deck capacity and design a skid base that distributes weight across multiple beams. We’ve done this for several aging platforms in Bohai Bay and Southeast Asia.

Q3: How small can the footprint be?

A: The absolute minimum we’ve delivered is roughly 9m x 7.5m for a workover-focused configuration with reduced mast height. For full drilling capability, figure 10m x 8m to 12m x 9m. We need your well bay dimensions to give you an exact number.

Q4: Our platform has low overhead clearance (crane beam at 35m). Can the mast fit?

A: Yes. Standard mast height on the SJF180DB is 33m to 41m. We can reduce mast height down to about 30m by adjusting the substructure clearance and using a shorter top drive adapter. The trade-off is slightly reduced pipe handling capacity, but for most workover and shallow drilling, it’s fine.

Q5: What certifications come standard? Can you get ABS?

A: Standard: API 4F (mast & substructure), API 7K (drawworks), API 8C (hoisting), ISO9001, and HSE. For ABS, DNV, BV, or CCS, we obtain certification as an option. We’ve done this for multiple export rigs — allow 2–3 months extra for class society review.

Q6: Do you provide offshore commissioning and training?

A: Yes. We’ll send field service engineers to your platform for installation supervision, hook-up, commissioning, and hands-on crew training. Typical on-site duration: 2–4 weeks depending on complexity. Remote support via Si-driller telemetry is also available after commissioning.

Q7: What about spare parts — can we get them quickly?

A: We maintain a consigned spares inventory for critical items: drawworks brake pads, hydraulic seals, sensors, control system boards. For active campaigns, we can establish a spares consignment at your onshore base. Major components (e.g., replacement drawworks drum) take 4–8 weeks.

Q8: We already have a BOP and manifold system on our platform. Will the SJF180DB connect?

A: Almost certainly. Our high-pressure manifolds are fully interchangeable with major global brands. If you send us your existing manifold make, model, and connection types, we’ll provide adapters or modify our interface to match. No forced replacement of serviceable equipment.

Q9: Can we witness factory testing before shipment?

A: Absolutely — and we recommend it. Our 750-ton load test facility allows full mast and substructure proof-loading to API 4F requirements. You can bring your own third-party surveyor or use our accredited subsidiary, SJPETRO, for independent verification. Virtual witnessing (live video) is also available.

Q10: What is the typical lead time for an SJF180DB?

A: For a standard configuration with minor customization (footprint adjustment, standard coatings), 8–9 months from order to delivery. Full custom engineering (new mast height, class society certification, unusual power configuration) adds 2–3 months. Contact us with your required delivery date for a firm commitment.

Q11: Is financing available?

A: As a Sinopec subsidiary, we can work with international buyers on letter of credit terms (typically 30% advance, 40% on FAT, 30% before shipment). For large multi-rig orders, we can discuss alternative arrangements.

Q12: Have you exported the SJF180DB outside China?

A: Directly, the SJF180DB has been supplied to Malaysian and Southeast Asian operators. The larger SJF series (including the 225 and 315 models) has been exported to the United States. The broader Sinopec Oilfield Equipment group has exported 297 drilling rigs worldwide.
