Applications
The offshore oil drilling platform — specifically the jack-up type — is purpose-built for a diverse range of shallow-to-medium water operations. Here’s where our platforms deliver maximum value:
1. Exploration Drilling
For wildcat wells in frontier basins or proven plays, jack-up platforms offer the ideal balance of capability and cost. You get the drilling power needed to reach 30,000-foot depths with the mobility to move between prospects efficiently. Our SJ-JU series has been deployed in exploration campaigns across the Persian Gulf, Southeast Asia, West Africa, and offshore China.
2. Development Drilling (Cluster Wells)
Once a discovery is made, development drilling begins. Our cantilever design lets you drill multiple directional and horizontal wells from a single jack-up position. With up to 24.4 meters of longitudinal outreach and ±6.1 meters of transverse movement, you can cover a substantial drilling envelope without moving the platform.
3. Well Intervention & Workover
Mature offshore fields require regular well intervention — scale removal, plug and abandonment, recompletion. Using a jack-up platform for workover operations eliminates the need for costly fixed-platform modifications or dedicated intervention vessels. The stable elevated deck provides a safe environment for snubbing, coiled tubing, and wireline operations.
4. Platform-Supported Drilling
In field development scenarios, jack-up platforms often drill and set conductors for satellite platforms or subsea tiebacks. Our platforms are designed to interface with standard subsea and surface wellhead equipment, making them compatible with your existing field architecture.
5. Offshore Wind Turbine Installation Support
Beyond oil and gas, the global offshore wind industry has created substantial demand for jack-up platforms. Wind farm installation and maintenance vessels share many characteristics with drilling jack-ups — self-elevating hulls, heavy-lift capacities, and stable work decks. The SJ-JU series can be adapted for wind farm support roles, including turbine foundation installation and maintenance operations.
6. Emergency Well Control & Relief Well Drilling
In blowout scenarios, response teams need a stable platform capable of operating in challenging conditions. Our jack-up platforms can be mobilized for emergency relief well drilling, with the same drilling capacities and well control equipment as conventional offshore rigs.
7. Regional Deployment — Middle East, Asia-Pacific, Africa
Our platforms are specifically designed for major offshore basins:
-
Persian Gulf & Arabian Sea — 300-375 ft water depths, high-temperature environments.
-
South China Sea & Southeast Asia — Cluster drilling for mature fields, monsoon-season operations.
-
West Africa Coast — Moderate water depths, supply chain accessibility.
-
Offshore China (Bohai Bay, East China Sea) — Low-temperature rated designs available.

Why Choose SJ Petroleum Machinery?
Built by Sinopec — Not a Trader
SJ Petroleum Machinery is a wholly owned manufacturing subsidiary of Sinopec, one of the world’s largest integrated energy companies. Our offshore platforms are designed, fabricated, and tested in the same facilities that supply Sinopec’s own offshore drilling fleet. You’re not dealing with a middleman — you’re buying direct from a Sinopec-owned manufacturer with full engineering and quality control.
80+ Years of Petroleum Machinery Heritage
We started building petroleum equipment in 1941. Over eight decades, we’ve manufactured more than 200 product models across 12 series. Our equipment is deployed in virtually every oil-producing region on earth — from the Middle East to Southeast Asia, West Africa to South America.
Full Classification & Certification
Our jack-up platforms are built to ABS, DNV, Lloyd’s Register, and CCS classification standards. We also hold API 2A-WSD, API 2A-LRFD, ISO 19900, ISO 19901-9, and ISO 18647 certifications, with full compliance documentation for international projects.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q1: What’s the difference between a jack-up platform, a semi-submersible, and a drillship?
A jack-up platform rests on legs that are lowered to the seafloor and lifts the hull above water during drilling. It operates in shallow to medium water depths (typically up to 450 ft). Jack-up rigs have a stable, motion-free deck when in elevated mode, providing a stable platform for drilling.
A semi-submersible floats partially submerged, anchored by mooring lines or dynamic positioning — suitable for deeper waters (up to 10,000+ ft). A drillship is a ship-shaped vessel with drilling equipment through the hull — for ultra-deep water (10,000–12,000+ ft).
Short answer: If your water depth is less than 450 ft, a jack-up is typically the most cost-effective choice. If you’re going deeper than that, you need a semi-sub or drillship.
Q2: How deep can your jack-up platforms drill?
Our SJ-JU-400 platform has a maximum drilling capacity of 30,000 ft (9,144 m) — enough for most shallow-to-medium water exploration and development wells. For deeper reservoirs, the SJ-JU-450 offers 35,000 ft (10,668 m) capacity.
Q3: What water depth can your platforms handle?
The SJ-JU-300 operates in up to 300 ft, the SJ-JU-375 up to 375 ft, the SJ-JU-400 up to 400 ft, and the SJ-JU-450 up to 450 ft — with leg lengths designed accordingly. For specific project requirements exceeding these depths, we can engineer custom leg lengths and jacking systems.
Q4: How many people can your platform accommodate?
Accommodation ranges from 120 persons (SJ-JU-300) up to 180 persons (SJ-JU-450). All accommodation spaces include full amenities — private or shared cabins, mess facilities, recreation areas, hospital, and laundry — meeting offshore accommodation standards.
Q5: What drilling equipment do you include with the platform?
We offer integrated drilling equipment packages including:
-
Derrick (typically 170 ft high, 1.5M–2M lb hook load capacity)
-
Top Drive (NOV or equivalent, up to 91,000 ft-lb torque)
-
Drawworks (electric or hydraulic)
-
Mud pumps and solids control system
-
BOP stack (annular + double ram, 5,000–10,000 psi)
-
Pipe handling system (iron roughneck, setback area, catwalk)
You can specify third-party OEM components (NOV, MHWirth, etc.), or we can source to your preferred vendor list.
Q6: What’s your typical lead time for a jack-up platform?
Newbuild jack-up platforms typically require 24–36 months from contract signing to delivery. Expedited construction is possible if we have existing hull slots available. For custom designs, lead times may extend to 36–42 months depending on complexity.
Q7: Do you offer refurbished or second-hand platforms?
Yes. We offer refurbished and upgraded jack-up platforms from our inventory or from third-party sellers. Refurbished platforms can be delivered in 12–18 months and may offer significant cost savings over newbuilds.
Q8: What certifications do you offer for international projects?
Standard certifications include ABS, DNV, Lloyd’s Register, and CCS. We also provide API 2A-WSD, API 2A-LRFD, ISO 19900 series, and ISO 18647 documentation. For specific regulatory requirements (e.g., Gulf of Mexico BSEE compliance, North Sea UK HSE), please specify, and we’ll supply the required documentation.
Q9: How does the platform move between locations?
Our jack-up platforms are non-self-propelled — they require tugboats for transit. During transit, legs are fully retracted, and the hull floats like a barge. Transit speed is typically 4–6 knots. For faster mobilization, we can arrange tug support packages as part of the supply contract.
