High-Pressure Fluid Control Swivel Elbow

High-Pressure Fluid Control Swivel Elbow

SJ Petroleum Machinery Co., Ltd., a wholly‑owned Sinopec subsidiary, manufactures API 6A high‑pressure connectors and swivel joints. 80+ years of upstream engineering, delivered worldwide.
  • 360° Continuous Rotation Under Pressure:The swivel joint uses a double row of hardened steel balls (thrust and radial bearings) that allow the outlet flange to rotate freely while the inlet remains fixed. Rotation torque is low – typically 50–100 Nm at rated pressure – one person can swing the outlet with a bar.

  • Metal‑to‑Metal Dynamic Seal with Live Loading:Two independent dynamic seals: a primary metal (stellite) seal ring that contacts a hardened rotating face, plus a secondary elastomer (HNBR or AFLAS) backup for zero leakage at low pressure. The seal stack is spring‑loaded (Belleville washers) to maintain contact pressure even as components wear. No packing adjustment required.

Product Types

We offer three families of high‑pressure swivel elbows, distinguished by connection type and service.

Series Connection Type (Inlet/Outlet) Pressure Rating Best For
SJ‑SWF (Flanged) API 6A flange to API 6A flange 5k – 20k psi Wellhead trees, production manifolds, fixed installations
SJ‑SWH (Hammer‑Union) Fig 1502 / 2002 / 2202 to same 10k – 20k psi Fracturing, cementing, coil tubing – rapid connect/disconnect
SJ‑SWM (Mixed) Flange to hammer‑union, or flange to threaded 10k – 20k psi Transition between equipment types

Within each series, we offer standard elbow (90° fixed bend) and, on request, 45° and 60° bend angles. The swivel rotation is independent of the bend angle – you always get 360° rotation of the outlet plane.

For extreme high‑cycle applications (e.g., automated frac manifolds), we offer the SJ‑SWH‑HD with hardened bearing raceways and an extended seal stack – rated for 50,000 rotation cycles.

Application Fields

Swivel elbows are used wherever high‑pressure piping must be connected under misalignment or frequently reoriented.

  • Fracturing Manifolds (Zipper Frac)
On a multi‑well pad, the frac manifold has multiple outlets to different wellheads. Each outlet has a swivel elbow that rotates to align with the wellhead flange – no matter the well spacing. Without swivels, you would need custom pipe spools for every well. Our SJ‑SWH hammer‑union swivels are standard on many frac spreads.

    Well Testing & Flowback
Temporary well test equipment (separator, heater, flare stack) is often positioned at odd angles relative to the wellhead. A swivel elbow at the wellhead outlet allows the flowline to be routed in any direction – simplifying rig‑up.

  • Coiled Tubing Injector Head Connections
The high‑pressure hose from the coiled tubing pump to the injector head often needs a 90° bend with rotation. Our swivel elbow eliminates hose kinking and allows the hose to be positioned away from hot engine exhaust.

  • Cementing Manifolds
Cementing pumps are heavy and hard to position. A swivel elbow on the pump discharge lets the cement line go in any direction – no re‑flanging, no pipe stress.

  • Wellhead Christmas Trees
On trees where the flowline wing valve is at an odd angle, a flanged swivel elbow installed between the wing valve and the flowline allows the flowline to run straight (avoiding doglegs). This reduces erosion and simplifies insulation.

  • Hydraulic Power Unit (HPU) Connections
High‑pressure hydraulic hoses (5,000 psi) often need a 90° bend at the pump or accumulator. A compact threaded swivel elbow prevents hose strain and makes disassembly easier.

Why Choose SJ Petroleum Machinery for High‑Pressure Swivel Elbows?

1. Field‑Proven Seal Life
Our metal‑plus‑elastomer dynamic seal has been tested to 20,000 rotation cycles at 15,000 psi (independent lab). That is 2‑3 years of typical frac service. Competitive swivels often leak after 5,000 cycles or seize due to bearing failure.

2. Low Torque = Safe Operation
A swivel that requires a 3‑meter cheater bar to rotate is a hazard – it encourages crews to use improper tools, risking injury. Our torque (60–100 Nm) means one person with a standard 18″ wrench can rotate the outlet easily, even under pressure.

3. Standardized Seal Kits Across Sizes
You do not need to stock a different seal kit for 2″, 3″, and 4″ swivels. All our swivel elbows use the same metal seal ring and O‑ring cross‑sections. One kit covers your entire fleet – lower inventory cost, no risk of using the wrong seal.

4. Interchangeable with Major Brands
Our flanged swivels have the same bolt circle and hub dimensions as API 6A standards. Our hammer‑union swivels use standard Fig 1502/2002 threads and wing nuts – they swap directly with Weco, FMC, and other brands. No adapter needed.

5. Rapid Repair & Seal Kits in Stock
We maintain seal kits and bearing sets in Houston, Dubai, and Jingzhou. A field replacement (drain grease, remove retainer, swap seals, repack bearings) takes 30–60 minutes. We provide video instructions and a simple tool kit.

6. Customizable for Special Service
Need a 45° bend instead of 90°? A flange on one end and hammer‑union on the other? 22Cr duplex for seawater injection? Inconel 625 for 20% H₂S? Tell us your connection, pressure, and fluid – we will build it.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: Can your swivel elbow rotate under full working pressure?
Yes – the dynamic seal is designed for rotation at rated pressure. We test every swivel at 1.1× rated pressure while rotating the outlet through 360° multiple times. Some customers rotate the swivel while pumping fracturing with no issues.

Q2: How often do I need to regrease the bearings?
Every 100 rotations, or once per week in continuous use, or before each job. Use high‑pressure lithium grease (NLGI #2) or specialty frac grease (containing moly). A grease fitting is provided – pump until fresh grease appears at the seal area. Overgreasing will not hurt it.

Q3: What is the maximum rotation speed?
There is no practical speed limit – but the swivel is designed for occasional rotation (e.g., aligning a pipe), not continuous rotation like a rotary table. If you need continuous rotation under pressure (e.g., for a rotating head on a snubbing unit), please see our rotating snubbing head product – different design.

Q4: Can I use your swivel elbow for sour gas (H₂S)?
Yes – standard 4130 body is NACE MR0175 compliant (hardness controlled). For high H₂S partial pressures (> 100 mbar), we recommend upgrading to 22Cr duplex or Inconel 625 wetted surfaces. Also, the bearing grease must be H₂S‑compatible (no sulfur‑reactive additives). Specify "sour service” when ordering.

Q5: How do I know when the seal needs replacement?
Two indicators: (1) visible leakage at the rotating interface (intermittent weeping) – replace immediately. (2) torque increases to > 200 Nm – the metal seal is wearing out. For critical applications, order the visual wear indicator option (a groove that disappears at 80% wear).

Q6: Can the swivel elbow be repaired in the field, or must it be sent to a shop?
Field repair is possible with basic tools: remove the retaining ring (snap ring or threaded retainer), pull the outlet hub, clean old seals and grease, install new seal ring and O‑rings, repack bearings, reassemble. We provide a field repair kit with tools and instructions. A shop repair (lapping the metal seal faces) is needed only after 3–4 field seal replacements.

Q7: What is the temperature limit?
Standard HNBR seals: –29°C to +121°C. High‑temp AFLAS seals: –20°C to +180°C. For cryogenic service (down to –46°C), we use special low‑temp grease and FKM seals – lead time is longer. Note that metal seals are unaffected by temperature – only the elastomer backup matters.

Q8: Do you offer a version with a position indicator (e.g., to show rotation angle)?
Yes – we can add a 360° graduated scale and a fixed pointer on the body. Useful when you need to repeat the same orientation every time. Cost is modest – ask for the "angle indicator” option.

Q9: What is the typical lead time for swivel elbows?
Stock sizes (2″ and 3″ Fig 1502/2002, 15k psi, 4130 body): 2–4 weeks. Corrosion‑resistant alloys: 8–10 weeks. Mixed connections (flange to hammer‑union): 4–6 weeks. Large orders (50+ units) may require 8 weeks.

Q10: Can I use your swivel elbow in a horizontal orientation where the weight of the pipe hangs on the swivel?
Yes – the bearing design includes radial bearings that support side loads. Maximum radial load: 5,000 N (500 kg) for the 2″ size, 10,000 N for the 3″ size. If your piping weighs more, use a separate pipe support – do not rely solely on the swivel to hold the weight.
