Application Fields – Where Modular Systems Deliver Maximum Value
🏔️ Remote and Roadless Locations (Mountain, Jungle, Arctic Tundra)
When there is no road to the drill site, your only option is modular transport. Our helicopter-transportable modular rigs are designed specifically for this challenge. The ZJ30HDB system splits into 49 helicopter-slingable modules, each under 10 tonnes, allowing the entire rig to be flown into locations inaccessible to conventional transport. Applications include:
-
Andean mountain drilling
-
Papua New Guinea jungle exploration
-
Canadian and Siberian Arctic tundra
-
Offshore island drilling without bridges
🧊 Arctic and Permafrost Regions (Siberia, Northern Canada, Alaska)
Conventional rigs require extensive winterization in the field. Our Arctic-rated modular systems come pre-equipped with low-temperature materials, heated enclosures, and cold-hardened components – tested in our national-level low-temperature impact laboratory.
We have delivered 11 low-temperature drilling rigs to Rosneft in Russia, and three ZJ40 truck-mounted cold-weather rigs to Orienburg Drilling Company. The ZJ40 operates normally from +45°C to -45°C and can be stored at -60°C. These rigs use cold-weather materials and heat preservation processes specifically developed for Arctic conditions.
🚢 Multi-Well Pad Development (Shale, Tight Gas, CBM)
When drilling 20–40 wells from a single pad, you need to move the rig between wellheads frequently. Our modular substructures are designed with integrated skidding interfaces, allowing the assembled rig to move from well to well without disassembly. The modular design does not require breakdown between wells – only when relocating to an entirely different pad.
🌊 Offshore and Coastal Drilling
Platform deck space is always at a premium. Our offshore modular packages are designed to fit within compact platform footprints, with modules sized for efficient use of deck area. Marine-rated enclosures, explosion-proof electrical components, and integrated heating systems for cold-water environments are standard on offshore packages.
🌍 Cross-Border Land Drilling
When a drilling program spans multiple countries overland, rail transport becomes the most efficient method. Our rail-transportable modular systems are dimensioned to fit within standard rail loading gauges, allowing the entire rig to travel by rail from the manufacturing base in Jingzhou, Hubei province, to Central Asia, Russia, or European markets.
Why Choose SJ Petro for Modular Drilling Systems?
🏭 We Designed the Systems, Not Just Assembled Them
Modularity is not an afterthought for us. Our engineering team has been designing purpose-built modular drilling rigs for over two decades. We developed the ZJ30HDB helicopter-hanging drill rig – one of China’s first helicopter-transportable modular rigs – and we drafted China’s national design standard for low-temperature drilling rigs.
We are not a trading company re-labeling equipment. We are the actual manufacturing base for Sinopec Oilfield Equipment Corporation, producing over 200 product models across four categories and 12 series.

We provide export packing, shipping documentation, and on-site assembly supervision as part of our modular rig supply.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q1: What is the difference between a modular drilling system and a conventional rig that is disassembled for transport?
A: A conventional rig "disassembled” was not designed to be taken apart. Critical connections require field fabrication – welding, cutting, re-plumbing. A modular drilling system is designed from the start with repeatable, standardized connections. Modules use pin-and-box fittings, pre-wired harnesses, and quick-connect fluid couplings. Assembly is reconnection, not re-construction. This reduces assembly time from weeks to days.
Q2: How long does it take to assemble a modular drilling system on site?
A: For a truck-transportable system (ZJ40–ZJ70) with a prepared pad and experienced crew, assembly typically takes 5–7 days from arrival of the first module to spud-ready. For a helicopter-transportable system in remote terrain, allow 8–12 days due to helicopter flight time constraints. The BigEasy crane-free assembly system is fastest – full rig-up in 3–4 days using the rig’s own hydraulic lifts.
Q3: Can your modular drilling systems be moved between wells on a pad without disassembly?
A: Yes. Our modular substructures are designed with integrated skidding interfaces. Once assembled, the entire rig can skid to the next offset well using our electro-hydraulic skidding system – staying fully assembled. You only break down the modular rig when relocating to an entirely different pad or region.
Q4: How many modules does a typical modular drilling rig break into?
A: It depends on the rig size and transport method. A ZJ40 truck-transportable system typically breaks into 20–30 modules. A ZJ30HDB helicopter-transportable system breaks into 49 helicopter-slingable modules. Larger rigs require more modules; smaller workover rigs require fewer. We provide a module manifest with every system.
Q5: Do your modular drilling systems meet API standards?
A: Yes. All our modular drilling systems are designed, manufactured, and certified to API 4F (structures), API 7K (drilling equipment), API 8C (hoisting equipment), API Q1 (quality), and API RP500 (electrical). We are authorized to apply the API monogram and welcome third-party inspection.
Q6: What is the typical lead time for a modular drilling system?
A: Standard lead time for a complete modular drilling rig is 8–10 months from order confirmation to FOB port shipment. Helicopter-transportable versions require additional engineering for module weight optimization – allow 10–12 months. Retrofit modular kits for existing rigs require a site survey and custom engineering – 12–16 weeks.
Q7: Do you offer training for assembly and disassembly?
A: Yes. Our standard modular rig supply includes on-site assembly training for your crew. Our assembly supervisor walks through the complete process, from foundation preparation to final pin connections. We also provide:
-
Module manifest – identifies every module by weight, dimensions, and lifting points
-
Assembly sequence diagram – step-by-step order of operations
-
Quick-connect guide – pre-wired harness labeling and fluid coupling identification
After the initial assembly, your crew is certified to assemble and disassemble the system independently.
Q8: What is the maximum drilling depth your modular systems can achieve?
A: Our ZJ90 modular system supports drilling depths up to 9,000 meters (29,530 feet) with 4‑½″ drill pipe. This is a full-capacity drilling rig, not a reduced-capability "portable” compromise. Modularity does not reduce drilling performance.
Q9: Can you supply a modular drilling system for our specific logistics constraints (e.g., narrow mountain roads, limited crane capacity)?
A: Yes. We have engineered modular systems for roads with tight turning radii, bridges with weight restrictions, and sites without crane access. Our engineering team needs your logistics survey – road width, bridge load limits, helicopter capacity (if air transport), and available lifting equipment. We then design module dimensions and weights to fit your constraints.
