SHXJ180 offshore workover rig

SHXJ180 offshore workover rig

A dedicated offshore workover rig like the SHXJ180 is built specifically for well intervention tasks – with lower deck load, faster mobilization, and simpler operation. If your fixed platform needs to maintain dozens of wells over 10-20 years, a workover rig pays for itself within the first few jobs.

Quick Rig-Up Time – 24 Hours from Barge to First Pull:Because workover windows are often tight (weather windows, production shutdowns), the SHXJ180 can be rigged up by a 4-person crew in less than 24 hours. The telescopic mast uses a single hydraulic cylinder – no need for a crane to raise it.

Dual Capability: Workover + Light Drilling:While it’s a workover rig at heart, the SHXJ180 can handle sidetracking, well deepening (up to 300m additional depth), and cement squeeze jobs with minor modifications. That’s flexibility you won’t get from pure hydraulic workover units.

Applications – Where the SHXJ180 Shines

Application Typical Operation
Workover (routine) Pulling & running tubing, rod change, pump replacement, downhole gauge repair
Sidetracking Milling window, kickoff, drilling short radius horizontal sections (≤300m)
Well deepening Drilling additional 200-400m below original TD
Cement squeeze & plug Squeeze cementing, plug setting, abandonment preparation
Fishing operations Retrieving broken tubing, packers, or other fish
Well cleanup Circulation, sand washing, acid stimulation prep

Best fit platforms: Fixed jacket platforms in water depths 5-40m, originally designed for light intervention or medium workover. The SHXJ180 is particularly popular on mature fields where wells need frequent maintenance (every 12-18 months).

Product Range: Offshore Workover Rigs (SHXJ Series)

SJ Petroleum Machinery offers a complete line of fixed platform workover rigs, covering light to heavy intervention:

Model Hook Load Typical Use
SHXJ90 900 kN (202,000 lb) Light workover, shallow wells (≤2,500m)
SHXJ112 1,120 kN (252,000 lb) Standard workover (≤3,500m)
SHXJ135 1,350 kN (303,000 lb) Medium workover + light drilling
SHXJ158 1,580 kN (355,000 lb) Heavy workover
SHXJ180 1,800 kN (405,000 lb) Heavy workover + light drilling (best seller)
SHXJ225 2,250 kN (506,000 lb) Heavy drilling hybrid (crosses into light drilling rig category)

The SHXJ180 hits the sweet spot for most mature platform needs – enough grunt for deep workover, but still lightweight enough for easy handling.

OEM Customized Solutions – Built for Your Exact Platform

We don't do "one size fits all.” Every SHXJ180 starts as a base design, then we tailor it to your platform’s constraints.

What we can customize:

Customization Area Options
Module weight & size Split into 10-12 smaller lifts (down to 8 tons per module) for very light cranes
Drive type AC VFD (standard), hydraulic (cost-saving), or diesel-mechanical
Top drive vs. rotary table AC VFD top drive (recommended) or conventional rotary table + kelly
BOP handling Integrated BOP trolley and lifting frame
Control cabin Single driller seat with HMI, or dual-station (driller + assistant)
Well control package Choke manifold, accumulator unit mounted on substructure
Coiled tubing prep Guide chute and injector head interface for future coiled tubing addition
Corrosion upgrade 316 stainless steel hydraulic lines, full thermal spray aluminum coating for tropical/sulfate-reducing bacteria environments

How we work with you:

  1. You send us: platform deck plan, crane capacity curve, well program (depth, tubing size, expected pulling loads)

  2. Our engineering team (25+ offshore specialists) creates a layout drawing and weight distribution report within 2 weeks

  3. We jointly review and adjust module splits to fit your crane limits

  4. Full 3D model shared for your platform integration study

  5. Then we build, test, and ship

Why Choose SJ Petroleum Machinery?

Factor What You Get
Sinopec pedigree Backed by a Fortune 500 energy group – we’re not a fly-by-night supplier.
Workover specialization We’ve delivered over 100 workover rigs since 1990. The SHXJ180 design has been refined through three major upgrades based on field feedback.
Compact & lightweight Our rigs consistently weigh 25-30% less than competitors with same hook load – lower deck reinforcement costs.
API & third-party friendly All pressure-containing components API-monogrammed. Your inspector will find full traceability.
In-house full-load test yard Every SHXJ180 is assembled and tested to 110% of rated load in our 50,000m² yard. Client witness testing welcome.

Training included We train your crew at our Jingzhou center or on your platform – with simulator-based driller training optional.

Real operator feedback: "We replaced a hydraulic workover unit with the SHXJ180. Our average job time dropped from 5.2 days to 3.8 days – mainly because the AC VFD top drive handles connections faster and snubbing is smoother.” – Senior production engineer, Bohai Bay field.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: What does "SHXJ180” mean?

A: "SH” = offshore (Hǎi shàng), "XJ” = workover rig (Xiū jǐng jī), "180” = nominal hook load in metric tons (180 tons = 1,800 kN). Simple.

Q2: Can the SHXJ180 be used on a platform with only a 15-ton crane?

A: Possibly – but we’d need to split modules into smaller lifts (down to 8-10 tons each). This increases the number of lifts but is doable. Tell us your crane capacity and we’ll propose a module breakdown.

Q3: How does it compare to a hydraulic workover unit (HWU)?

A: Hydraulic units are lighter but slower and less powerful for rotating operations. The SHXJ180 gives you full rotary table/top drive capability – much faster for tubing make-up/break-out and for drilling light sidetracks. If you only need snubbing and light tubing pulling, an HWU might suffice. But for real workover efficiency, the SHXJ180 wins.

Q4: What is the typical delivery time?

A: Standard SHXJ180 (no major customization) ships in 7-9 months from order. Fully custom (new module splits, special coating) may take 10-11 months. Expedited options available – ask about current shop loading.

Q5: Do you provide installation and commissioning offshore?

A: Yes. Our field service team (ex-workover supervisors) will be on your platform for rig-up supervision, commissioning, and first job assistance. Typically 2-3 weeks on site.

Q6: What warranty do you offer?

A: 18 months from shipment or 12 months from commissioning (whichever is earlier). Extended warranty plans (up to 5 years) available for major components like drawworks and top drive.

Q7: Can the rig be converted from AC VFD to hydraulic later?

A: Not easily – the base structure differs. But we can design a hybrid-ready version at order time (mounting points for hydraulic power unit, but still shipped with AC drive). Better to decide upfront.

Q8: What spares should we stock?

A: We provide a recommended spares list based on your expected workover frequency. Typical first-year package costs about 3-5% of rig price. Common wear items: brake pads, slip dies, hydraulic hoses, VFD cooling fans.

Q9: Do you offer financing or leasing?

A: Not directly, but we can introduce you to Sinopec-affiliated leasing partners. Contact our sales team for details.

Q10: How do I get a firm quote?

A: Send an inquiry with your platform name, well count, typical workover depth, and crane capacity. We’ll reply with a technical proposal and budget price within 5 working days.
