Rated working pressure Lubricators

Rated working pressure Lubricators

Not all lubricators are the same. A lubricator rated for 70 MPa (10.000 psi) cannot safely inject grease into a valve rated for 105 MPa (15.000 psi) service. The injection pressure must exceed the valve’s operating pressure plus seat resistance – but the lubricator itself must be rated to contain that pressure without leaking or bursting.

Certified Pressure Ratings – Not “Maximum” Guesswork:Many lubricator manufacturers print a “maximum pressure” on the tool – but that number is often theoretical, not verified. SJ rated working pressure lubricators are:

Designed to a specific pressure class (70/105/140 MPa)

Tested at 1.5x rated pressure (105. 157.5. or 210 MPa) before leaving our factory

Certified with a test report traceable to the serial number

You know exactly what pressure your lubricator can deliver – and safely contain.

Match Lubricator Rating to Valve Rating – Correct Sizing:A 140 MPa lubricator works on a 70 MPa valve. But the reverse is not true. Using a 70 MPa lubricator on a 105 MPa valve risks:

Seal blowout under high differential pressure

Pressure gauge rupture

Inability to overcome seat resistance (valve remains unlubricated)

Applications – Matching Rated Pressure to Service

Application Required Lubricator Rating Why This Rating
Land drilling (standard depth ≤3,000m) 70 MPa Mud manifold pressures typically 20–35 MPa – 70 MPa lubricator provides margin
Deep drilling (4,000–5,000m) 105 MPa Higher mud pump pressures (35–50 MPa) plus additional seat resistance
Offshore platform choke & kill manifold 105 MPa Well shut-in pressures up to 70 MPa – lubricator must inject against that back pressure
Hydraulic fracturing (conventional) 105 MPa Frac pressures 70–90 MPa – lubricator must exceed that to inject grease into valve seats
High-pressure fracturing (shale, deep) 140 MPa Frac pressures 100–120 MPa – only 140 MPa lubricator can overcome seat resistance
Well control / BOP test manifold 105 MPa Test pressures up to 70 MPa – lubricator must inject into pressurized system
Geothermal drilling (high temp) 105 or 140 MPa High temperatures require upgraded seals; pressure rating as above
Sour gas fields (H₂S) Any rating (with Viton/Kalrez seals) Pressure rating unchanged; seal material upgraded for chemical compatibility

Product Types – Rated Pressure Models

SJ‑LUB‑70 (70 MPa) – Standard Duty

Best for: Conventional drilling, workover rigs, cementing operations.

Key features:

  • Lowest handle effort (easiest pumping at 70 MPa)

  • Standard nitrile seals – compatible with most greases

  • Green pressure gauge face (0–100 MPa)

  • Price-optimized for fleet purchase

Typical users: Land drilling contractors, workover service companies.

SJ‑LUB‑105 (105 MPa) – Heavy Duty

Best for: Deep drilling, offshore platforms, fracturing support, choke & kill manifolds.

Key features:

  • Reinforced seals for high cycle life at 105 MPa

  • Yellow gauge face (0–140 MPa) with green band to 105 MPa

Typical users: Major frac fleets, ultra-deep exploration drilling.

SJ‑CV‑LUB‑RATED – Rated Pressure Check Valve Fittings

Permanent lubricator fittings for valve bodies, available in 70, 105, and 140 MPa pressure classes.

Key features:

  • Spring-loaded check valve opens at 3–5 MPa injection pressure

  • Rated pressure stamped on fitting body

  • Stainless steel or steel construction

  • Thread sizes: 1/8″ NPT, 1/4″ NPT, or custom

Never install a 70 MPa check valve fitting on a 105 MPa valve. SJ color-codes fittings (green=70, yellow=105, red=140) to prevent mix-ups.

SJ‑PNEU‑LUB‑RATED – Pneumatic Lubricators by Pressure Class

Air-driven lubricators for high-volume operations, available in 105 MPa and 140 MPa ratings (70 MPa available on request).

Key features:

  • 2–10 liter grease reservoir

  • Requires 0.4–0.8 MPa air supply at 200–500 L/min

  • Includes pressure regulator and filter

  • Serialized with test certificate

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: What does "rated working pressure” mean compared to "maximum pressure”?

A: "Maximum pressure” is often a theoretical, untested number – the pressure at which the manufacturer thinks the tool might fail. "Rated working pressure” is the safe, tested, certified pressure at which the tool is designed to operate continuously. SJ rated working pressure lubricators are hydrostatically tested at 1.5x rated pressure. We do not publish "maximum” numbers – only certified working pressures.

Q2: Can I use a 140 MPa lubricator on a 70 MPa valve?

A: Yes – safely. Higher rated pressure is fine. The lubricator will inject at whatever pressure is needed (up to 140 MPa). However, you may find the 140 MPa lubricator requires more handle effort because its intensifier is optimized for higher output. For routine 70 MPa work, use the 70 MPa model – easier on your technicians.

Q3: What happens if I use a 70 MPa lubricator on a 105 MPa valve?

A: Two problems. First, the lubricator may not generate enough pressure to overcome seat resistance – the valve won't get lubricated. Second, if it does generate 105 MPa, the 70 MPa-rated seals can extrude or burst, causing grease leakage or sudden pressure release. Do not do this.

Q4: How do I know which pressure rating my valve needs?

A: Check your valve’s nameplate for working pressure rating. Lubricator rating should be ≥ valve working pressure + 20%. Example: 70 MPa valve → 84 MPa minimum → SJ 105 MPa lubricator. If you are unsure, SJ can recommend based on valve make, model, and operating pressure.

Q5: Do you provide test certificates for each lubricator?

A: Yes – every SJ rated working pressure lubricator includes a hydrostatic test certificate with the serial number, test pressure (1.5x rated), duration, and pass/fail result. We retain test records for 10 years.

Q6: How often should I recertify a lubricator?

A: SJ recommends recertification (pressure test) every 12 months or after any major impact (dropped tool). Field recertification: connect to a pressure test pump, pressurize to 1.5x rated pressure, hold for 5 minutes. Document results. SJ can perform recertification at our service centers.

Q7: Are your lubricators compatible with [brand name] high pressure grease?

A: Yes – SJ lubricators work with all standard NLGI grade 00 to 2 greases, including lithium complex, calcium sulfonate, PTFE-loaded, and biodegradable formulations. Avoid using grease containing solid particles larger than 50 microns (can clog check valves).

Q8: What is the shelf life of a new lubricator (unused, stored properly)?

A: Indefinite for metal components. Elastomer seals degrade over time – after 5 years of storage, replace seals before use. Replacement seal kits available.

Q9: Do you offer a calibration service for pressure gauges?

A: Yes – we can recalibrate and certify pressure gauges. Alternatively, gauges are field-replaceable with standard 2.5″ diameter, 1/4″ NPT connection, glycerin-filled units from any major instrument supplier.
