Low-temperature drilling rig

Low-temperature drilling rig

SJ Petroleum Machinery Co.Ltd a subsidiary of Sinopec Oilfield Machinery Co., Ltd., leverages 80+ years of manufacturing heritage to build robust low-temperature drilling rigs. We engineer fully winterized systems designed to maintain safe, efficient drilling operations in extreme cold down to -45°C.

Comprehensive Trace-Heating & Thermal Insulation:Every fluid-bearing line on the rig—from the mud return system to the hydraulic control pipes—is equipped with self-regulating trace heating cables. These lines are wrapped in closed-cell thermal insulation that prevents heat loss to the ambient air. This ensures the crew never faces frozen valves or choke lines that could shut down a drilling operation.

Heated BOP & Critical Control Components:The Blowout Preventer (BOP) stack is the most safety-critical unit. Our winterization package includes a heated sub-structure with forced-air heating coils directly aimed at the BOP rams and annular preventers. We also use specialized low-temperature elastomers (seals, gaskets) that remain flexible and compressible down to -45°C.

Application Areas

Our low-temperature rigs are the go-to choice for hydrocarbon extraction in the world's most challenging freezable regions:

  • Arctic & Sub-Arctic Onshore Fields: Siberia (Russia), Prudhoe Bay (Alaska), and the Mackenzie Delta (Canada). Operations where standard rigs would freeze solid in December.

  • High-Altitude Mountain Drilling: Geothermal and mining operations above 3,000m elevation, where winter conditions last for 6+ months and diurnal temperature swings exceed 30°C.

  • Northern Sea & Ice-Edge Offshore: Jack-up rigs operating in the Barents Sea or Sea of Okhotsk. Our low-temp packages are fully marinized and salt-spray resistant.

  • Cold-Environment Oil Sands & SAGD: Heavy oil recovery projects in Northern Alberta where winter temperatures allow for temporary ice roads, but the rig still requires cold protection.

Product Types

We offer three distinct configurations of Winterized Drilling Equipment:

  1. Arctic Skid-Mount Winterized Rigs: Designed for long-term pad drilling in permafrost zones. The sub-base includes a foundation heating system to prevent the drilling floor from settling due to freeze-thaw cycles.

  2. Arctic Modular Container Rigs: "Rig-in-a-box" designs with all components winterized but still capable of being transported via standard 40ft containers and heavy-lift helicopters for remote logistics.

  3. Heavy-Duty Arctic Trailer Rig: Specialized for fast relocation on ice roads. Includes heated tracked slippers for low-ground-pressure movement across snow drifts.

Why Choose Sinopec's Low-Temperature Drilling Rigs?

If you are a field operations manager in a cold region, you know that winter downtime is the most expensive downtime. Here is why we are the preferred OEM partner:

  • Decades of Cold-Region Experience: We have been building and supporting rigs in China's northern Daqing oilfield (40°C below zero) for 40+ years. We know the failure points of "truck-stop winterization"—and we fix them at the factory.

  • Full-System Certification: Our winterization kits are tested and certified to meet NORSOK (for North Sea) and API-recommended cold-weather standards. You can pass your safety audit on day one.

  • Continuous Operation Guarantee: Unlike a standard rig that needs constant de-icing of ring valves, our trace-heating loops run on a smart thermostat, maintaining continuous hydraulic flow and preventing expensive freeze-ups.

  • Remote Start & Monitoring: Our AC VFD systems come with a remote interface that allows you to monitor rig temperatures from the field camp. If a heating zone dips below a threshold, the supervisor gets an alert before a line freezes.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Will your low-temperature rig operate at -50°C (-58°F)?
A: Our standard spec is rated for continuous operation down to -45°C. However, we can offer a specialized deep-arcic package for -50°C by swapping to aviation-grade lubricants and adding more aggressive thermal blankets and redundant heating loops.

Q: What happens if the trace heating system fails during a drill?
A: Critical systems (like the BOP control stack) have redundant heating paths. If a primary trace heating strip fails, a secondary backup cable kicks in. Additionally, all heated pathways are monitored by a heating control unit that alerts the driller instantly of any temperature drop.

Q: Do I need special cold-weather oil-based mud to run your rig?
A: We recommend it for optimal performance. Our rigs are designed to handle customized winterized drilling fluids, including low-ECT (Effective Circulation Temperature) mud, but they can also handle standard mud if you keep the circulation loop moving and active.

Q: How does your "Arctic Modular" rig ship compared to a standard modular rig?
A: Ships exactly the same! The difference is that every module—including the control cabin—has been upgraded with closed-cell insulation, Arctic marine sealants, and heated floors. It goes into the same shipping container as a standard rig but arrives ready for sub-zero temps.

Q: Can I convert my existing Sinopec ZJ50 rig to a low-temp version?
A: Yes, we offer a "Winterization Retrofit Kit" for existing Sinopec rigs. This includes adding the BOP heaters, insulated line jackets, hydraulic fluid upgrades, and external thermal covers.
