Application Areas
[Insert Product Image 04: Traveling block hook lifting a heavy casing string]
Land drilling rigs (1500–7000m) – The most common application. Our 350t and 450t hooks are standard equipment on many Chinese‑built and retrofitted land rigs worldwide. The 5:1 safety factor gives drillers peace of mind even when jarring.
Offshore jack‑up & platform rigs – Corrosion protection is critical. Our marine package hooks have been running on jack‑ups in the North Sea and Gulf of Mexico for over eight years without coating failure. The optional air latch lets the driller open the hook remotely – no one needs to climb the derrick leg.
Deep & ultra‑deep drillships (750t model) – For 10,000m+ total depth. Our 750t hook (7,500 kN) is proof‑loaded to 937 tons. The tapered roller bearing design handles both the high static load and the shock loading of emergency disconnects.
Coiled tubing & snubbing units – Smaller 150t hooks are used on CT units for light workover and well servicing. The non‑rotating version prevents the coiled tubing injector from spinning the hook.
Crane & heavy lifting (non‑oilfield) – Many industrial lifting contractors use our hooks for pile driving, heavy equipment moving, and bridge construction because of the API 8C certification and traceable testing.
Why Choose SJ Petroleum Machinery Co., Ltd.?
1. Sinopec‑backed quality – Our parent company drills thousands of wells annually. We know exactly how a hook is abused in real life – the overpulls, the side loads, the dropped elevators. We design for that, not for lab conditions.
2. Full traceability, full documentation – Each hook has a unique serial number laser‑etched. You receive: material mill certificate, heat treatment chart, UT/MT reports, proof load certificate, dimensional report, and API 8C conformance statement. Everything you need for your own quality audit.
3. Shorter lead times than European or US suppliers – Standard models (150–450t) in stock or 4–6 weeks. Large 585–750t models in 8–10 weeks. Compare that to 20–30 weeks from some competitors. Air freight available for emergencies.
4. No "hidden” ratings – Some manufacturers list a "maximum load” that is actually the proof load. We clearly mark Rated Load (Working Load Limit) on the hook body. No confusion, no safety risk.
5. Interchangeable with major brands – Our shank dimensions match common traveling blocks from NOV, Oil States, Weatherford, and others. In most cases, you can replace your existing hook without modifying the block or the bails. Send us your block model, we will confirm fit.
6. 10‑year service life guarantee (subject to inspection) – If your hook ever fails under rated load due to material or manufacturing defect within 10 years, we replace it free of charge. This is not insurance – this is confidence in our forging and heat treatment process.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
[Insert Product Image 05: Latch mechanism detail showing open/closed indicator]
Q1: How often does a traveling block hook need to be recertified?
API 8C recommends full recertification (visual, dimensional, NDT, proof load) every 5 years or after any overpull exceeding 115% of rated load. Many customers do annual visual and MPI, with a full recertification at 5 years. We can perform recertification at our factory or provide a checklist for your local certified shop.
Q2: What is the difference between a "traveling block hook” and a "hook block assembly”?
A hook block assembly has the sheaves (pulleys) integrated into the hook body – it is a single unit. A traveling block hook is just the hook that hangs below a separate traveling block. Most modern rigs use separate blocks and hooks because it allows easier repair and replacement. We manufacture both; specify which you need.
Q3: Can I use the auxiliary hook on your 450t model to hang a snub line or a guide rope?
The auxiliary hook (where equipped) is rated for light lifting only – typically 50–100 tons. It is not designed for continuous snubbing or side loading. Use it for hanging air hoses, light chains, or a second set of elevators. For snub lines, use a dedicated side‑pull anchor point.
Q4: How do I know if my hook needs replacement or just recertification?
Our service guidelines: Replace if you see (1) Cracks longer than 3mm in critical zones, (2) Hook opening increased by more than 5% of original, (3) Latch spring broken or latch does not close fully, (4) Bent shank, (5) Bearing lockup. Recertify if everything passes NDT and proof load. We provide a detailed inspection checklist with every hook.
Q5: What lubrication does the rotation bearing require?
For standard rotation hooks, we include a grease fitting on the side. Use NLGI #2 lithium‑based EP grease every week of operation or every 200 hours, whichever comes first. Pump until old grease purges from the lower seal. For sealed‑for‑life bearings (non‑rotation hooks or special order), no lubrication is required – replace the bearing cartridge at 5,000 operating hours.
Q6: Can you supply the hook with a built‑in load cell?
Yes. Our TBH‑LC series integrates four strain gauges in a full Wheatstone bridge inside the shank. The signal (4‑20mA or CANbus) connects to your driller’s panel. Accuracy: ±2% of reading from 10% to 100% of rated load. The load cell adds 150mm to shank length and 25–50kg weight. Calibration certificate included.
Q7: Do you offer a pneumatic latch for all models?
Yes, for models from 150t to 750t. The pneumatic latch uses rig air at 100–150 psi. The control box includes a three‑position valve (open/closed/neutral) and a pressure gauge. We also supply a manual override in case of air failure. The non‑air version (manual spring latch) is standard; pneumatic is an option.
Q8: How do I order a custom shank length?
Send us a drawing of your traveling block bails and the desired distance from bail pin center to hook body top. Minimum shank length 500mm, maximum 1500mm for single‑piece forging. Longer shanks (up to 2000mm) can be welded construction with full NDT – contact engineering.
Q9: What is the typical delivery time for a 350t hook?
Stock items (standard shank, rotation, manual latch) ship within 7 business days for customers with approved credit. Custom shank length or pneumatic latch: 4–5 weeks. Large 750t models: 8–10 weeks. Expedite service (2 weeks for 750t) available at +25% surcharge.
Q10: Do you offer rental hooks for short‑term projects?
Yes. We rent 225t, 350t, and 450t hooks with monthly rates and damage waiver. Minimum rental period: 3 months. Rental hooks are recertified before each rental. Purchase option available at the end of the rental term. Contact our rental desk for a quote.
