Series rig configuration

Innovative Technology & Key Features Across the Series

All rigs in our series rig family share these engineering advantages:

  • Modular substructure & mast – The mast is available in three heights (110, 130, 150 ft) and pins to a common substructure design. You can upgrade mast height without changing the foundation.

  • Common drawworks gearbox – One gearbox design covers 1,000‑2,000 HP. For higher power, we add a second gearbox in parallel. Spare gearbox fits any rig in the series.

  • Interchangeable AC VFD cabinets – The same drive cabinets (size, wiring, programming) are used across all AC‑powered models. A failed drive from Rig A can be swapped into Rig B in 30 minutes.

  • Scalable mud pump package – Start with two 1,000 HP pumps. Add a third pump later without modifying the skid or piping. The manifold has pre‑drilled flanges.

  • Common driller’s console – The same touchscreen layout, joystick functions, and alarm setpoints across all rigs. Drill the first well on a new series rig like you have been using it for years.

  • Standard walking system interface – All series rigs from 300 tons upward are pre‑drilled to accept our stepping moving equipment. Add walking later without welding on the substructure.

  • Plug‑and‑play optional equipment – Top drive, iron roughneck, catwalk, and pipe racking system connect via standardized hydraulic and electrical quick‑couplers.

  • Data logging & remote monitoring – The same PLC program runs on all AC VFD rigs. Your central office sees the same data format from every rig.

  • Cold‑weather or desert kits – Standardized upgrade kits (insulation, heaters, sand filters) that bolt on to any series rig.

Product Types – Series Rig Variants

Within each series rig capacity, we offer several configuration variants:

  1. ZJ‑30 (150 tons) – Light workover and shallow drilling (2,500 m). Popular for coal bed methane, water wells, and shallow oil. Smallest footprint, lowest cost.

  2. ZJ‑40 (225 tons) – Entry‑level conventional drilling. Good for 3,000‑4,000 m wells in mature fields. Often purchased by small independent operators.

  3. ZJ‑50 (300 tons) – Workhorse of the series. Most popular model for 5,000 m wells. Available in mechanical (lowest cost) or AC VFD (best performance). Our best‑selling series.

  4. ZJ‑70 (450 tons) – Deep drilling (7,000 m). Almost always ordered with AC VFD and top drive. Suitable for high‑pressure, high‑temperature wells.

  5. ZJ‑90 (675 tons) – Extra‑deep. Used in ultra‑deep exploration (9,000 m). Includes third mud pump and heavy‑duty mast. Usually paired with walking system for multi‑well pads.

  6. ZJ‑120 (900 tons) – Heavy drilling and casing running. For the deepest wells (12,000 m) or heavy casing strings. AC VFD only. Fully automated pipe handling recommended.

  7. Desert Series – ZJ‑D variants with sand filters, oversized radiators, and sealed electrical enclosures. Ambient temperature rating up to 55°C.

  8. Arctic Series – ZJ‑A variants with -45°C cold packages, insulated modules, and heated hydraulic systems.

  9. Walking Series – ZJ‑W variants pre‑integrated with our stepping moving system. Delivered as a walking rig from the factory.

Applications – Choosing the Right Series Rig Configuration

Select the correct series rig configuration based on your well program:

  • Shallow oil / CBM (under 2,500 m) → ZJ‑30 (150 ton) – Mechanical drive is cost‑effective.

  • Conventional oil (3,000‑4,000 m) → ZJ‑40 or ZJ‑50 – Use AC VFD for better tripping speed.

  • Deep oil / gas (5,000‑7,000 m) → ZJ‑70 with top drive – AC VFD required for torque control.

  • Ultra‑deep exploration (8,000‑10,000 m) → ZJ‑90 with third pump – Add walking system for pad drilling.

  • Heavy casing / high pressure → ZJ‑120 – Only for operators with very demanding wells.

  • Multi‑well pad (any depth) → Add walking system to any ZJ series (W variant).

Why Choose SJ Petro’s Series Rig Configuration?

  • Proven standard designs – Over 200 series rigs delivered since 2005. All design bugs have been fixed. You are buying a mature product.

  • Shorter delivery – Standard series rigs are delivered 2‑4 months faster than custom designs. ZJ‑50 in 8 months vs. 12+ months for a one‑off.

  • Lower spare parts inventory – One set of spares supports your entire ZJ fleet. We provide a recommended spare parts list per rig type, with common items shared across all.

  • Crew familiarity – Drillers who have run a ZJ‑50 can step onto a ZJ‑70 and find the same controls. Reduced training cost and fewer operating errors.

  • Upgradeable – Start with a mechanical ZJ‑50 today. Later, you can convert to AC VFD using a bolt‑on drive kit. Add top drive, walking system, or pipe handling without cutting steel.

  • API & ISO certified – Every series rig is built to API 4F, 7K, 8C, and ISO 9001:2015. Third‑party inspection welcome.

  • Global parts support – Common parts (brake discs, seals, sensors, VFD cards) stocked in Dubai, Singapore, and Houston agent. Same part number fits all ZJ rigs of same generation.

  • Financing options – Standardized rigs are easier to finance. We work with banks that know the ZJ series.

  • Warranty – 12 months on all components. Structural warranty (mast, substructure) extendable to 5 years.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: What is the difference between ZJ‑50 mechanical, DC, and AC VFD?
Mechanical: cheapest, uses clutch and band brake, good for shallow wells and low tripping frequency. DC: smoother than mechanical but requires DC motor maintenance. AC VFD: best performance – infinite variable speed, regenerative braking, remote control, but highest upfront cost.

Q2: Can I upgrade a mechanical ZJ‑50 to AC VFD later?
Yes – we offer a "Conversion Kit” that replaces the clutch and mechanical gearbox with an AC motor and VFD cabinet. The existing drum and frame are reused. Field conversion takes 2‑3 weeks.

Q3: How do I choose between ZJ‑50 and ZJ‑70 for a 5,500 m well?
A ZJ‑50 (300 ton) is rated for 5,000 m with 5" DP. For 5,500 m, the string weight will be near its limit. We recommend ZJ‑70 (450 ton) to have a safety margin, especially if you plan to run heavy casing. The cost difference is about 15‑20%.

Q4: Are all ZJ series rigs road legal without disassembly?
No – like any land rig, the mast and substructure must be disassembled into modules for transport. However, the modules are designed to fit standard flatbed trucks (no over‑width permits in most countries). The walking variant moves as a complete unit on the pad but not on public roads.

Q5: Do you stock spare parts for older ZJ series rigs?
Yes – we maintain parts for ZJ series back to 2005. Brake pads, seals, bearings, and sensors are the same across all ZJ rigs. For very old rigs (pre‑2005), we can still manufacture parts from original drawings.

Q6: Can I get a series rig with a higher mast than standard?
Yes – standard mast heights are 110, 130, and 150 ft. We can offer 170 ft and 190 ft masts on ZJ‑90 and ZJ‑120 for very long triple stands. Contact engineering for feasibility.

Q7: What is the typical lead time for a ZJ‑50 AC VFD rig?
8 months from order to factory acceptance test (FAT). This includes all major components (drawworks, mast, substructure, two mud pumps, top drive, control house). Shipping takes additional 1‑2 months depending on destination.

Q8: Do you provide training for crews moving from a smaller to larger series rig?
Yes – we offer a 2‑week "Series Familiarization” course that focuses on the differences: higher capacity drawworks (brake feel), larger mud pumps, and any optional equipment (top drive, walking). The course can be at your site or our factory.

Q9: Can I mix modules between ZJ‑50 and ZJ‑70 rigs (e.g., use a ZJ‑70 mud pump on a ZJ‑50)?
Yes – the mud pump skid has the same manifold flange pattern across all ZJ‑50, ‑70, and ‑90. You can swap pumps. Drawworks are not interchangeable because the frame and drum size differ.

Q10: How do I get a recommendation for the right series rig configuration?
Email series@sjpetro.com with:

  • Planned well depth (maximum total depth)

  • Maximum casing size and weight (if known)

  • Preferred drive type (mechanical, DC, AC)

  • Terrain and climate (desert, Arctic, etc.)
