Service Types – Downhole Tool Maintenance Programs

We offer several downhole tool maintenance service levels:

  1. Inspection & Assessment Package – We receive your tool, perform a full visual, dimensional, and NDE inspection, and provide a report with a "repair or scrap” recommendation. No repair work is done without your approval.

  2. Basic Maintenance – Inspection, replacement of wear parts (grapples, seals, shear pins), thread dressing, and new O‑rings. Pressure test for jars. No major machining or heat treatment.

  3. Full Overhaul & Recertification – Complete teardown, inspection, replacement of all wear components, re‑cutting of threads, heat treatment if needed, full pressure or cycling test, and new data plate and certificate. Tool returned to OEM "like new” condition.

  4. Emergency Field Support (Mobile) – For remote locations, we send a technician with a portable inspection kit (thread gauges, portable hardness tester, magnetic yoke) to assess tool condition on site. Minor repairs can be performed in the field.

  5. Exchange Program – We keep a stock of refurbished, recertified tools. You send us your worn tool, we ship you a refurbished unit from stock. Your downtime is reduced to shipping time only.

  6. Fleet Management Contract – For operators with large tool inventories, we provide scheduled maintenance (e.g., after every 10 runs or annually), with a dedicated account manager and priority service.

Applications – Who Needs Downhole Tool Maintenance

  • Fishing tool rental companies – Tools come back from jobs with unknown damage. Professional maintenance ensures the next customer gets a reliable tool.

  • Drilling contractors – Owned fishing tools and jars need periodic recertification to maintain API compliance and avoid liability.

  • Workover & snubbing companies – Jars and spears are used daily. High cycle counts require frequent seal and grapple replacement.

  • Offshore operators – Logistics are expensive. You cannot afford a tool failure offshore. Pre‑job maintenance is mandatory.

  • Government & regulatory bodies – Some jurisdictions require downhole tools to be recertified every 12‑24 months. We provide the documentation.

  • Tool manufacturers – We offer subcontract maintenance for brands we do not manufacture. We can reverse‑engineer parts for obsolete tools.

Why Choose SJ Petro for Downhole Tool Maintenance?

  • OEM knowledge – We built many of the tools we repair. We have original drawings, material specs, and heat treat recipes. No guesswork.

  • API‑certified processes – Our maintenance procedures follow API Spec 7‑1 and API RP 7G. Third‑party witness testing available.

  • Full in‑house capability – Machining, heat treating, welding, NDE, and testing – all under one roof. No subcontractor delays.

  • Exchange program – Your rig is down while the tool is in the shop. Exchange keeps you working.

  • Global logistics – We arrange pickup from your location (any country) and return shipping after repair. One invoice covers everything.

  • Fast turnaround – Standard maintenance: 5‑7 business days. Overhaul: 10‑15 days. Exchange: 2‑3 days (shipment time extra). Emergency rush available.

  • Competitive pricing – As an OEM manufacturer, we are 30‑40% below third‑party repair shops for equivalent API‑certified work.

  • Warranty on repairs – 12 months on all workmanship and replaced components (excluding wear items like grapples, which are consumables).

  • Training – We can train your maintenance crew in basic inspection and field repair techniques for downhole tools.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: How often should downhole tools be recertified?
API does not specify a fixed calendar interval. The general industry practice is: jars – every 12 months or 500 cycles; fishing tools – every 12 months or after any job where the tool was heavily loaded; stabilizers – every 24 months or when wear is visible. Some operators’ internal policies require annual recertification.

Q2: Do you repair tools from other manufacturers (e.g., Weatherford, NOV, Baker)?
Yes – we maintain reverse‑engineered drawings for the most common models. If we do not have a drawing, we can reverse‑engineer from your sample (additional charge). We also offer a "cross‑reference” identification service: send us photos and dimensions, and we will identify the OEM part.

Q3: What is the typical cost of a downhole tool overhaul?
Rough guide: Overshot overhaul (new grapples, seals, thread re‑cut, inspection) – 800‑800‑1,500 depending on size. Hydraulic jar overhaul (new seals, re‑chrome mandrel, test) – 1,500‑1,500‑3,000. Full recertification (including NDE and new data plate) – add 20%. Exchange is often 30‑40% of new tool price.

Q4: How do I get a tool to your facility?
We can arrange a freight carrier to pick up from your warehouse or rig site. For international shipments, we provide a commercial invoice, packing instructions, and customs clearance support. You pay shipping to our facility; we pay return shipping.

Q5: Can you perform field inspections without sending the tool to a shop?
Yes – our mobile field kit includes thread gauges, portable hardness tester, magnetic particle yoke (wet or dry), and borescope. A technician can inspect the tool at your location and recommend repair or replacement. Minor thread dressing and seal replacement can be done on site.

Q6: What documentation do you provide after maintenance?
You receive a digital package: incoming inspection report (including photos of damage), repair log (what was replaced), dimensional report (key measurements), NDE report (crack detection results), test certificate (for jars or pressure components), and a new recertification sticker. All reports are saved in our database for future reference.

Q7: How long does an exchange transaction take?
You call with the tool model. We confirm we have a refurbished unit in stock. You pay the exchange fee. We ship the refurbished tool within 24 hours (airfreight). You receive it in 3‑5 days. You then have 30 days to return your worn core. If the core is not returned, we charge the full core deposit.

Q8: Do you offer a warranty on exchanged tools?
Yes – the refurbished tool we ship has the same 12‑month warranty as a tool we overhaul. The core you return must not be intentionally damaged – normal wear is acceptable.

Q9: Can you recertify tools to meet ABS or DNV requirements for offshore?
Yes – we can schedule third‑party inspection (ABS, DNV, BV) at your cost. We provide the test witnesses with full access. Our facility is already approved by these societies for certain tool categories – contact us to confirm.

Q10: How do I set up a maintenance contract or request a repair quote?
Email tools-maintenance@sjpetro.com with:

  • Tool type (overshot, jar, mill, stabilizer, etc.)

  • Manufacturer and model (if known)

  • O.D. and length

  • Condition description (what is worn or broken)

  • Quantity

  • Desired service level (inspect only, repair, overhaul, exchange)
We will respond within 24 hours with a repair estimate and lead time.
