Application Fields

Coalbed Methane Development Wells. Primary application. Works for vertical and directional CBM wells from 100 meters to 1,500 meters depth. Compatible with freshwater, polymer, and low-solids drilling fluid systems.

Shallow Coal Exploration & Core Drilling. Geological exploration drilling in coal basins where mobility between closely spaced boreholes matters more than high pressure.

Water Well Drilling. Rural and municipal water wells in coal-bearing formations—same low-pressure, high-volume requirements as CBM.

Geothermal Boreholes. Shallow-to-medium depth geothermal exploration (under 1,000 meters) where low-pressure circulation protects fragile formations.

Mine Rescue & Exploration Boreholes. Emergency drilling applications requiring portable equipment that can deploy quickly and run on diesel power without external utilities.

HDD & Utility Crossings. Horizontal directional drilling for pipeline and cable installations crossing coal seams or soft formations.

Why Choose SJ?

Sinopec Engineering—Built for Real Field Work. SJ isn’t a pump-assembly shop. We’re a Sinopec subsidiary with over 70 years in petroleum equipment manufacturing. The same engineering that builds 3,000 HP mud pumps for ultra-deep oil wells designs our CBM pumps. You’re getting industrial-grade durability, not light-duty construction.

Domestic CBM Experience, International Standards. China has the world’s third-largest CBM reserves. SJ pumps have circulated millions of meters of coal seam wells in Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, and Xinjiang basins. We know what breaks on a CBM pad—valve springs that fatigue from coal fines, packing that wears unevenly, liners that erode. And we’ve engineered the solutions.

Every Pump Gets API 7K Certification. API Spec 7K covers the design, manufacture, and testing of drilling pump components. SJ follows it to the letter. Each pump receives a full factory performance test, including a pressure safety validation, with documented test results included. No shortcuts.

Complete Package, One Supplier. SJ supplies the pump, skid, drive (diesel/electric), drivetrain components, pulsation dampener, relief valve, and suction stabilizer as an integrated package. No chasing three different vendors for the power end, fluid end, and mounting frame.

Pre-Shipment Witness Testing Available. We’ll run your pump on our test loop while you watch—in person or via live video. Flow rate, pressure output, vibration, temperature rise, and pressure safety valve function. You sign off before we crate it.

Global Parts Availability. SJ stocks wear parts (plungers, packing, valves, seats, gaskets) at distribution points and can air-freight emergency orders to most CBM-producing regions within 72 hours.

English-Language Documentation & Support. International customers get full technical manuals, parts catalogs, and troubleshooting guides in English. Our export team communicates in English via email, WeChat, WhatsApp, or phone during China business hours.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: What exactly makes a mud pump "CBM-specific” versus a standard oilfield pump?

Size and pressure range, mostly. Deep oil drilling needs 2,000+ HP pumps capable of 5,000+ psi. CBM wells typically run under 600 HP and under 600 psi. SJ’s CBM pumps aren’t scaled-down oil pumps—they’re purpose-sized for the CBM duty cycle. Smaller means cheaper initial cost, lower fuel consumption, easier transport, and cheaper wear parts. You don’t pay for capacity you’ll never use.

Q2: How often do I need to replace valves and seats in CBM service?

Depends on your solids control and coal fines content. With a good shale shaker and reasonable desander, expect 200–400 drilling hours between valve/seat changes in coal seam drilling. Harder coals with more quartz content wear faster. SJ stocks all common sizes and can advise on expected interval based on your specific formation.

Q3: Can I run this pump off a generator instead of a diesel engine?

Yes. SJ offers electric motor drive options (380V/460V/600V, 50Hz or 60Hz) for sites with generator or grid power. The electric version is generally lower maintenance and quieter. Same skid, just swap the engine for a motor and add a soft-start or VFD.

Q4: What’s included in the skid-mounted package versus buying just the bare pump?

Full skid package includes: pump body mounted to steel skid, prime mover (diesel engine or electric motor), drivetrain (clutch, transmission, drive shaft, guards), suction manifold with strainer, discharge manifold with pulsation dampener and pressure relief valve, instrumentation panel (pressure gauge, tachometer, temperature gauge), and all piping and fittings. Bare pump is just the pump itself—you provide everything else.

Q5: How portable is "portable”? Can I move it without a crane?

Models under 300 HP weigh under 5,000 kg—most field service trucks with a crane can handle it. Heavier models need a dedicated crane or roll-back truck. The skid design includes forklift pockets, so any telehandler or rough-terrain forklift works. SJ doesn’t recommend lifting by sling around the pump body—always use the designated lifting points or skid-mounted lift eyes.

Q6: Do you offer training for my local crew?

Yes. SJ provides on-site commissioning and operator training for first-time customers—typically 1–2 days on location covering startup procedures, normal operation, shutdown, daily inspection points, and basic maintenance (packing adjustment, valve replacement, fluid end disassembly). Training can be included in the purchase package or arranged separately. Remote video training is also available.

Q7: What’s the typical lead time for a CBM mud pump order?

Stock catalog pumps (SJ-300, SJ-500) are usually 15–30 days. Custom configurations (specific plunger sizes, special coatings, non-standard drive arrangements) run 45–60 days. Emergency orders can sometimes be expedited from partial stock—contact the sales team with your timeline.

Q8: Can you replace a failed pump from another brand (Gardner Denver, National Oilwell, Ideco)?

Yes. SJ manufactures to standard API dimensions. If you have a failed pump on a CBM rig, tell us the model number, plunger size, and mounting configuration. SJ can typically supply a direct-replacement fluid end or complete pump that matches your existing piping and drive. This is a common request for international customers replacing worn-out legacy equipment.

Q9: What warranties do you offer?

Standard SJ warranty covers defects in material and workmanship for 12 months from shipment or 6 months from commissioning, whichever comes first. Wear parts (valves, seats, packing, plungers, liners) are excluded—these are consumables in normal operation. Extended warranty options available for large fleet orders.

Q10: How do I get started? What information do you need for a quote?

Send the sales team: (1) Target well depth range, (2) Desired flow rate (L/min or GPM), (3) Maximum working pressure required, (4) Power source preference (diesel or electric), (5) Any existing equipment that must be compatible (discharge line size, mud tank connections). We’ll respond with a technical datasheet, dimensional drawing, pricing, and estimated delivery within 2–3 business days.
