Key Applications

Fiber Optic & Utility Cable Installation

Urban HDD projects for fiber, power, or water lines require quiet, compact equipment that can be positioned in tight easements. Our electric-drive models (no exhaust, low noise) fit inside fenced utility yards and operate near hospitals or schools without complaints. The skid footprint is small enough to tuck beside a mud-recycling trailer.

Oil & Gas Pipeline River Crossings

When you’re drilling a 1,200-meter bore under a major river, pump reliability is non-negotiable. Our larger models (600–800 HP) maintain 600–800 GPM at 1,500 PSI for days on end, pushing low-solid polymer fluid across long distances. Dual-pump parallel configurations available for the biggest crossings.

Geothermal Loop Fields

Commercial geothermal installations require dozens of 200–300 foot bores in a grid pattern. A single portable skid pump can service multiple small rigs working in sequence. Move it once and let the rigs move around it.

Sewer & Stormwater Bypass

HDD rigs often work next to live utilities. Our mud pump doubles as a dewatering unit during pit excavation—just swap the fluid end packing to a different material. One machine, two jobs.

Environmental Remediation Boreholes

Horizontal wells used for vapor extraction or groundwater treatment require precise, low-pressure circulation to avoid fracturing the formation. Our VFD-controlled electric models give you fine-grained flow control down to 30 GPM without stalling.

Why Choose SJ Petroleum Machinery?

Built by a Company That Understands Fluid Power

SJ Petroleum Machinery is a subsidiary of Sinopec Oilfield Equipment Corp. – a business that has supplied high-pressure pumps to every major oilfield on Earth. That heritage means we know how to make a pump that lasts. But HDD contractors aren’t oil companies. So we scaled down, simplified, and price-optimized without cutting corners on the critical parts: the crankshaft, the bearings, and the fluid end.

HDD-Specific Engineering Team

We don’t just hand you a spec sheet. Our engineers have worked alongside HDD crews on pipeline jobs in the Andes and cable crossings in Southeast Asia. They know what wears out (valves and packing), what fails (castings with porosity), and what annoys operators (hard-to-bleed suction lines). Those lessons go into every pump we build.

Parts That Work with What You Already Own

Your service truck probably already carries spare valves and packing for a Gardner Denver or Wheatley pump. Good news – ours interchange. We didn’t reinvent the wheel. We just made it roll more smoothly and cost less.

Real-World Testing

Before any pump leaves our factory, it runs for 2 hours on a closed-loop dyno. We record vibration, temperature rise, and flow linearity. You get a signed test report. For critical jobs, you or your third-party inspector can be present.

Global Logistics, Local Feel

We’ve shipped HDD pumps to over 20 countries. Our export crates use 10mm plywood with sealed seams and desiccant bags – no moisture damage even after weeks at sea. We handle the paperwork (COO, BL, commercial invoice, packing list) and can recommend freight forwarders if you don’t have one.

Fair Price, Transparent Quote

We don’t play games. Our quote includes the pump, skid, drive (diesel or electric), factory test, export packing, and a 12-month warranty. No hidden "engineering fees” or "expediting charges.” Need a part? We’ll quote air freight separately – no markup.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: What size pump do I need for my HDD rig?

Rule of thumb for HDD:

  • 50,000 lb pullback rig → 200–250 HP pump, 200–300 GPM @ 800 PSI

  • 100,000 lb rig → 350–500 HP, 350–500 GPM @ 1,200 PSI

  • 200,000 lb+ rig → 600–800 HP, 600–800 GPM @ 1,500+ PSI
Tell us your rig model and typical bore length/diameter. We’ll size it precisely.

Q2: Diesel or electric – which is better for HDD?

  • Diesel: No power cord, independent of site power, easy to relocate mid-job. Best for highway/utility work.

  • Electric: Quieter, lower operating cost (where power is available), zero emissions, better flow control with VFD. Best for urban or tunnel jobs.
Many contractors own both. We can convert a diesel unit to electric later – the skid mounting pattern is the same.

Q3: How often do I need to replace liners and valves?

In clean sandy/clay conditions (typical HDD), expect:

  • Liners: 1,200–2,000 hours

  • Valves/seats: 600–1,000 hours

  • Packing: 200–400 hours
In rocky conditions or high-sand bentonite, halve those numbers. We recommend carrying a spare set for any bore longer than 500 meters.

Q4: Can the pump handle high-viscosity drilling fluids (like xanthan gum)?

Yes. The positive-displacement design pushes viscous fluid efficiently. However, suction strainer size matters – we recommend a coarse 1/4″ perforated basket and a flooded suction (mud tank higher than pump inlet) for viscosities above 40 seconds Marsh funnel.

Q5: Do you offer a sound-attenuated enclosure for urban jobs?

Yes. Our optional "City Canopy” reduces noise to 72 dBA @ 1m (diesel) or 65 dBA (electric). It includes:

  • Acoustic foam panels (fire-rated)

  • Forced air cooling with thermostatic fan

  • Lockable access doors for service

  • LED lighting inside
Adds about 400 kg and 30 cm to width.

Q6: What’s your warranty and support like?

12-month warranty (parts & labor) from shipment. We keep critical spares (liners, valves, packing, gaskets) in stock. For warranty claims, we ship replacement parts immediately; you return the failed parts for analysis. After warranty, we provide unlimited phone/email support and sell parts at cost plus shipping and a small handling fee.

Q7: I’m bidding on a job next month. Can you deliver fast?

For standard configurations (diesel + 350 HP + 4″ fluid end), we have stock units ready to ship within 2 weeks EXW. Custom builds (special materials, VFD, canopies) take 45–60 days. Tell us your deadline before we quote.

Q8: Do you accept used pumps as trade-ins?

Yes, on a case-by-case basis. We’ll evaluate the pump model, condition, and hours. Trade-in value is credited against your new pump purchase. We then refurbish and resell the old pump – it’s good for the environment and your budget.
