Applications
Our heavy duty offshore workover rig is used for:
-
Well Workover & Recompletion – Pull and replace production tubing, packers, and downhole safety valves.
-
Deep Well Stimulation Prep – Clean out scale, sand, or paraffin before acidizing or fracturing.
-
Plug & Abandonment (P&A) – Pull casing sections, cut and pull conductors. The high hook load cuts days off P&A campaigns.
-
Fishing Operations – Retrieve lost tools or broken pipe from deep wells.
-
Casing Patch & Repair – Run casing patch tools or liner hangers in deviated wells.
-
Platform Slot Recovery – Sidetrack from an existing well slot using whipstock (requires top drive option).
Product Types / Configurations
We offer three offshore workover rig variants to match your platform type:
| Model | Platform Type | Key Feature |
|---|---|---|
| SJW-250H (Hydraulic) | Fixed platforms without grid power | Diesel-hydraulic power pack, simple controls |
| SJW-250E (Electric) | Platforms with 600V/480V supply | AC-VFD, quieter, lower emissions |
| SJW-250M (Modular Skid) | Jack-up or tender-assisted | Lightweight skids (under 15t each), helicopter-liftable modules |
We also provide snubbing workover packages – the same heavy duty rig but with an integrated snubbing stack and control console for live-well interventions (up to 5,000 psi wellhead pressure).
Why Choose SJ Petroleum Machinery for Your Offshore Workover Rig?
1. Decades of Offshore Experience
We’ve supplied over 80 workover rigs to offshore projects globally, including some of the harshest environments – North Sea, Gulf of Thailand, and Brazil’s pre-salt region. Every design iteration came from real feedback.
2. Built to Marine Standards, Not "Rust-Resistant Paint”
Our offshore rigs are engineered with sacrificial anodes, sealed connectors, stainless steel fasteners, and triple-layer coating. We don’t cut corners on corrosion protection.
3. Compact, Platform-Friendly Layout
We work with your platform drawings to ensure the rig fits within crane reach, weight limits, and deck loading. Our modular design allows for staged delivery if platform space is constrained.
4. True Heavy Duty Rating
Some manufacturers label 150k lb rigs as "heavy duty.” Ours is genuinely rated for 250,000 lbs continuous, with safety factors per API 4F. No down-rating in tropical or arctic conditions.
5. Global Service & Rapid Spares
We stock workover rig parts in Aberdeen, Singapore, Houston, and Dubai. Our field service engineers can be on your platform within 5 days (most locations). Remote troubleshooting via video call – 24/7.
6. Custom Engineering for Your Well Conditions
Need higher hook load? 300,000 lbs? Need sour service or H2S-rated components? Want a top drive instead of rotary table? We customise every rig. No two offshore platforms are identical – your rig shouldn’t be either.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q1: What’s the difference between a workover rig and a drilling rig?
A workover rig is smaller, lighter, and designed to service existing wells – pulling tubing, replacing pumps, or fishing. A drilling rig drills new wells from scratch. Our heavy duty workover rig can handle light drilling (e.g., sidetracking) with optional top drive and mud pumps.
Q2: Can this rig work on a jack-up rig (self-elevating unit)?
Yes. The SJW-250 modular skid version is used on jack-ups. We’ve delivered to several Cantilever jack-ups – the rig sits on the main deck and works through the cantilever slot.
Q3: What’s the maximum well depth this workover rig can handle?
With 250,000 lbs hook load and 1-1/8" wireline, you can work over wells up to 20,000 ft (6,000 m) with typical 3-1/2" tubing. For deeper wells or heavier strings, ask about our 300,000 lb version.
Q4: Do you provide training for offshore crews?
Absolutely. We offer 2-week training at our facility (classroom + full-scale rig simulator) plus 2 weeks onboard during commissioning. We also provide digital training manuals and video SOPs.
Q5: What certifications does the rig carry?
Our offshore workover rigs are designed to API 4F (derricks), API 7K (drawworks), and API 8C (hoisting). We can provide third-party certification from ABS, DNV, or Lloyd’s at extra cost.
Q6: How long is the delivery lead time?
For a standard hydraulic 250k lb rig: 8–10 months from contract to FOB China port. Electric version takes 10–12 months. Expedited delivery (6–7 months) available for repeat orders.
Q7: Can I visit an existing installation?
With client permission, yes. We can arrange a visit to an operating platform in Southeast Asia or the Middle East where our rigs are in use. Contact us for a non-disclosure agreement first.
Q8: What about spare parts? Do you guarantee availability for 10+ years?
Yes. We maintain a 15-year spare parts commitment. Critical parts (seals, valves, hydraulic pumps) are off-the-shelf industrial components. Unique parts (drawworks drum, mast pins) are stocked by us.
Q9: How many people are needed to run this rig?
Typically 5–6 crew per shift: rig supervisor, workover operator, floor hand, crane operator (if platform crane used), and one helper. For snubbing operations, add 2 snubbing hands.
Q10: Do you offer rental or lease options?
Yes. We have a rental fleet of six SJW-250 rigs available for short-term projects (3–12 months). Long-term lease-to-own also available. Contact our commercial team for current availability.
