Applications – Where Heavy Duty Tools Are Required

Standard tools are fine for shallow, vertical wells with moderate loads. But heavy duty drilling and completion tools are mandatory for:

  • Deep wells (>15,000 ft / 4,500 m) – String weight exceeds 500,000 lbs. Need 500‑750 ton elevators, heavy wall drill collars, HWDP to avoid buckling.

  • Horizontal and extended reach wells – High side loads, torque, and drag. Heavy wall HWDP and spiral drill collars reduce fatigue and differential sticking.

  • Offshore deepwater – Corrosion allowance, heavy wall subs, NACE compliance. Packoff and lifting components must survive storm conditions.

  • Sour gas (H₂S) fields – NACE MR0175 certified tools with hardness ≤ 22 HRC. Heavy wall provides extra corrosion allowance.

  • Arctic / low temperature – Charpy impact tested at -46°C or -60°C. No brittle fracture risk.

  • Casing running in deep wells – Casing strings weighing over 1 million lbs. Need 750 ton side door elevators, heavy duty spiders.

  • Workover and snubbing – Heavy pull capacities (200‑300 tons) require heavy duty components across the entire string.

  • HP/HT wells – High internal pressures require subs with heavy wall and pressure‑tested connections.

Why Choose SJ Petro for Heavy Duty Drilling and Completion Tools?

  • Sinopec‑backed metallurgy – We are a direct subsidiary of China’s largest oilfield equipment group. Our steel sourcing, forging, heat treatment, and machining are all in‑house. No subcontractors.

  • API 7‑1, 7K & 8C certified – Every tool is manufactured under API Q1. Third‑party inspection (ABS, DNV, BV, SGS) is welcome.

  • Full material traceability – Every tool has a unique serial number. We supply EN 10204 3.1 material certificates with heat numbers, chemical analysis, and mechanical properties.

  • 100% NDE – Magnetic particle inspection (MPI) after heat treatment and after final machining. Ultrasonic thickness on heavy wall tools. Dye penetrant on threads.

  • Proof load testing – All hoisting tools (elevators, hooks, links) proof‑loaded to 125% of rated capacity. Certificate provided.

  • Heavy wall as standard – Our "heavy duty” means extra wall thickness, extra corrosion allowance, extra safety margin. We do not cut corners.

  • Global stocking – We keep common heavy duty tools (drill collars, subs, elevators) in Dubai, Singapore, and Houston agent for fast delivery.

  • Competitive direct pricing – No trading company markups. You pay factory‑direct prices for Sinopec‑level quality, typically 15‑20% below Western brands for equivalent API certification.

  • Warranty – 12 months on all heavy duty tools against material and workmanship. Hoisting tools have extended warranty on forged bodies (24 months).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: What is the difference between standard drill collars and heavy duty drill collars?
"Heavy duty” in drill collars typically means larger OD for the same ID (more weight per foot), premium 4145H material (vs 4140), full length heat treatment (vs only ends), and 100% MPI inspection. Heavy duty collars are used when you need maximum weight on bit and resistance to wear in abrasive formations.

Q2: How do I choose between integral HWDP and welded HWDP?
Integral HWDP (one‑piece forged from 4145H) has no friction weld – superior fatigue life in directional and horizontal wells. Welded HWDP is less expensive but has a weld zone that is a potential fatigue point. For long laterals (>2,000 m) and high dogleg severity, specify integral. For vertical or moderate directional wells, welded is acceptable. We supply both.

Q3: What is the maximum rated capacity of your heavy duty elevators?
Our DDZ series center latch elevators are rated up to 750 tons (1.5 million lbs). Used for heavy drill pipe, large tool joints, and casing strings in ultra‑deep wells. All 750 ton elevators are proof‑loaded to 938 tons at our factory.

Q4: Do you provide heavy wall subs for sour service (H₂S)?
Yes – we supply NACE MR0175 certified subs and crossovers with controlled hardness (≤22 HRC), special chemistry, and full NDE. The heavy wall provides extra corrosion allowance for long service life in sour wells. Certification includes HIC (hydrogen induced cracking) testing on material coupons.

Q5: Can you manufacture a non‑standard crossover to connect two proprietary thread types?
Absolutely. Provide the thread specifications (or a sample) for both ends. Our threading shop will cut the connections using master gauges. Heavy wall design ensures the crossover does not become the weak point in the string.

Q6: What is the typical lead time for heavy duty tools?
Common sizes (4‑3/4", 6‑1/2", 8" drill collars; 5" HWDP; 350‑500 ton elevators): 7‑14 days. Non‑standard sizes or special materials (non‑magnetic, sour service): 30‑45 days. Emergency rush service (additional fee) available.

Q7: How do I know if my drill collars need hardbanding?
Hardbanding is recommended for drill collars and HWDP run in abrasive formations (sandstone, quartzite) or in deviated wells where contact with casing occurs. It protects the OD from wear and reduces friction. We offer standard tungsten carbide hardbanding as well as proprietary low‑friction alloys.

Q8: What documentation do you provide with each tool?
Every tool includes: material certificate (EN 10204 3.1) with heat number and chemical/mechanical properties; heat treatment record chart; dimensional inspection report; MPI & UT report; and (for hoisting tools) proof load test certificate. All documents cross‑referenced to the tool serial number.

Q9: Can I send my worn heavy duty tools for refurbishment?
Yes – we offer re‑threading, hardbanding reapplication, body straightening, and recertification. Refurbished tools are tested to API standards and come with new documentation. Cost is typically 40‑60% of new tool price.

Q10: How do I request a quote for heavy duty drilling and completion tools?
