Product Types – Drill String Handling System Configurations

We offer drill string handling system packages at different levels of automation:

  1. Basic Manual‑Assist System – Catwalk machine + manual fingerboard + hydraulic spinner. Reduces heavy lifting but still requires crew in the derrick. Good for shallow wells and lower budgets.

  2. Semi‑Automated System – Iron roughneck + powered catwalk + fingerboard with position indicators. Crew still racks stands manually but torque and pipe transfer are mechanized. Most popular for land rigs.

  3. Fully Automated System – Iron roughneck + catwalk + vertical pipe racking arm + sensor‑equipped fingerboard + integrated driller’s console. Crew only observes; the system racks stands, makes connections, and tracks inventory. Ideal for high‑trip, high‑safety offshore or remote rigs.

  4. Offshore Compact System – All components with marine coating, explosion‑proof electricals, and a smaller footprint. Fingerboard often mounted directly below the crown block to save deck space.

  5. Retrofit Kit for Existing Rigs – We supply the mechanical and control components to add automation to your existing rig. Includes engineering analysis of your mast and substructure for additional loads.

  6. Pipe Racking & Storage System (Standalone) – For pipe yards, not on the rig. Horizontal pipe racks with conveyor feeding the catwalk. Reduces truck traffic and manual band‑breaking.

Applications – Where Our Drill String Handling Systems Are Used

Our drill string handling systems have been installed on:

  • Land drilling rigs – Multi‑well pad rigs with frequent tripping. Automation reduces non‑productive time and crew fatigue. Typical time savings: 2‑3 hours per day.

  • Offshore platform rigs – Limited deck space and high safety requirements. Our compact systems keep crew out of the red zone. Used on South China Sea platforms.

  • Jackup rigs – Harsh environment jackups in the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Our corrosion‑resistant systems survive salt spray and high ambient temperatures.

  • Workover rigs – Lighter duty but still benefit from catwalks and iron roughnecks to prevent back injuries. Our compact catwalk fits on smaller workover rigs.

  • Arctic land rigs – Cold‑weather systems with heated hydraulic fluid and low‑temperature seals. Installed on 11 Rosneft rigs.

  • Pipe storage yards – Horizontal handling systems for moving pipe from storage to delivery trucks.

Why Choose SJ Petro for Your Drill String Handling System?

  • OEM integration expertise – We build complete drilling rigs, so we know exactly how the pipe handling system interfaces with the top drive, drawworks, and mast. No mismatched interfaces.

  • API & ISO certification – All components are manufactured under API Q1. Third‑party inspection available.

  • Proven field reliability – Over 50 pipe handling systems in operation worldwide, some with 10+ years of service. We can provide references.

  • Custom engineering – Every rig has different mast geometry, pipe rack capacity, and drill floor layout. We design the system to fit your rig – not the other way around.

  • Global service & spare parts – We stock iron roughneck parts (spinner rollers, torque sensors, hydraulic valves) and catwalk wear parts in Dubai, Singapore, and Houston agent. On‑site commissioning included.

  • Quick retrofit – For existing rigs, we can install a catwalk and iron roughneck in 1‑2 weeks during a scheduled maintenance stop.

  • Competitive pricing – As a Sinopec subsidiary, we manufacture components in‑house, not from third‑party resellers. Savings passed to you.

  • Warranty – 12 months on all components. Iron roughneck torque head warranted for 24 months.

  • Training – We train your drillers and floor crews on safe operation and basic troubleshooting. One week on‑site included with system purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: How much time does an automated drill string handling system save?
On a typical 10,000 ft tripping operation, a semi‑automated system (iron roughneck + catwalk) saves 1.5‑2 hours per trip. A fully automated system with pipe racking saves 3‑4 hours per trip. Over a year, that can mean 500‑1,000 additional drilling hours.

Q2: Can I install a catwalk on my existing rig without modifying the substructure?
In most cases, yes. Our catwalk machines are designed to bolt onto the existing substructure beams, using existing hardpoints. We perform a structural analysis to ensure safe load transfer. For very old rigs, we may recommend adding support columns.

Q3: What is the maximum pipe length your catwalk can handle?
Standard catwalk handles singles up to 45 ft. Double section catwalk handles doubles up to 60 ft (typical for many land rigs). For triple stands (90 ft), we offer a telescoping catwalk that extends while the V‑door is open – custom design required.

Q4: Does the iron roughneck work with all thread types?
Yes – we supply interchangeable die inserts for API round thread, V‑thread, premium threads (VAM, Hydril, Tenaris), and casing threads. The torque turn system can be programmed with the target torque and turns for each connection type.

Q5: Is the system safe if the power fails during operation?
All hydraulic systems have accumulators that provide enough pressure to safely lower the catwalk and release the iron roughneck jaws. Electric systems have battery‑backed emergency retract. Manual override handles are also provided.

Q6: Do I need to modify my top drive elevator for automated racking?
Our pipe racking arm is designed to work with most top drive elevator models (National, Canrig, Varco, etc.). We need the elevator dimensions to size the pick‑up latch. Alternatively, we can supply an elevator with a compatible latching mechanism.

Q7: Can the fingerboard track pipe inventory automatically?
Yes – with our sensor‑equipped fingerboard (magnetic or optical), the PLC records which stand is in which finger slot. The driller’s screen shows a color‑coded map of the fingerboard. Optional RFID tags on each stand provide 100% accuracy.

Q8: What is the typical cost of a drill string handling system?
Budget range (basic catwalk + iron roughneck + manual fingerboard): 350,000‑350,000‑500,000. Fully automated system with racking arm and sensor fingerboard: 800,000‑800,000‑1,200,000. Pricing depends on pipe size, capacity, and level of integration. Request a firm quote.

Q9: Do you offer financing or leasing for these systems?
Yes – we work with finance partners to offer 12‑60 month lease or loan options for qualified buyers. The monthly payment is often less than the savings from reduced tripping time.

Q10: How do I get a proposal for a drill string handling system?
Email handling@sjpetro.com with:

  • Rig type (land/offshore) and make/model

  • Desired pipe size range and maximum stand length

  • Current tripping time and crew count (for ROI calculation)

  • Existing top drive model (if known)

  • Any space constraints on the drill floor
We will respond with a preliminary design, budget price, and estimated time savings within 5 working days.
