Product Types – Automated Iron Roughneck Configurations

We supply automated iron roughneck in several configurations to match your rig layout and budget:

  1. Standard Floor‑Mount Roughneck (IR‑50/80/100) – Pedestal‑mounted on the drill floor, adjacent to the mousehole. Swings into position over the connection. Most common for land rigs.

  2. Ceiling‑Mounted (Overhead) Roughneck – Suspended from a rail or beam in the derrick. Saves drill floor space. Ideal for platform rigs or tight jackups.

  3. Mobile (Cart‑Mounted) Roughneck – Mounted on a wheeled cart that can be stored off‑floor when not in use. Used on small workover rigs or as a backup unit.

  4. Top Drive‑Mounted Roughneck – Integrated directly onto the top drive. Spins and torques at the same time as the elevator lifts. Highest speed but heavier and more complex.

  5. Remote Operated (Closed Loop) Roughneck – Fully enclosed in a protective housing. Operator sits in a separate cabin with screens. Used on ultra‑high pressure or H₂S wells.

  6. Casing‑Only Roughneck – Larger jaws and higher torque, but slower spinning. No drill pipe capacity. Lower cost for dedicated casing running services.

  7. Retrofit Kit – We supply the roughneck and control system with mounting brackets designed to fit your existing drill floor layout. Can be integrated with your existing hydraulic system.

Applications – Where Our Automated Iron Roughneck Excels

An automated iron roughneck adds value in every drilling and well service operation, but it is especially critical in:

  • High‑volume land drilling (multi‑well pads) – Frequent tripping and casing running. Automated roughneck reduces connection time by 40‑50% compared to manual tongs.

  • Offshore platforms & jackups – Limited floor space and extreme safety requirements. The remote operation keeps crew out of the red zone. Our ATEX‑rated units are used on South China Sea platforms.

  • Casing & tubing running – Premium connections require precise torque turn control. Our IR‑100 with torque turn recording provides a digital certificate for every joint – accepted by operators for well integrity files.

  • Arctic drilling – Mechanical tongs become very dangerous in cold weather (frozen grips, slippery floors). Our electric IR‑80 with heated jaw doors works at -40°C.

  • Workover & snubbing units – Smaller, lighter automated roughnecks (IR‑30, IR‑50) fit on workover rig floors and reduce back injuries from handling heavy manual tongs.

  • H₂S / sour service wells – Our sealed, explosion‑proof roughnecks allow pipe handling without crew exposure to toxic gas.

Why Choose SJ Petro for Your Automated Iron Roughneck?

  • Sinopec manufacturing heritage – We are a direct subsidiary of China’s largest oilfield equipment group. Our 314‑engineer R&D team designs every component for high cycle life (over 50,000 connections).

  • API 7K certified & third‑party inspected – Every roughneck is pressure tested and torque‑calibrated before shipment. We provide calibration certificates traceable to NIST standards.

  • OEM of complete rigs – We understand how the roughneck integrates with the top drive, catwalk, and control system. No interface surprises.

  • Field‑proven reliability – Over 200 units in operation worldwide, with some logging over 500,000 connections. We can provide references from major drilling contractors.

  • Torque turn recording standard – No extra cost. Every connection’s torque curve and turns are saved. You can prove thread integrity to your client.

  • Quick delivery & spares support – Standard models in stock. Spare dies, seals, and sensors available from our Dubai, Singapore, and Houston agent warehouses.

  • Training & remote diagnostics – We provide on‑site training (1 week) and remote PLC access for troubleshooting. Your drillers will be confident in the system within days.

  • Competitive pricing – As a manufacturer with large‑scale production, we are 25‑35% below Western brands for the same API‑certified quality.

  • Warranty – 24 months on the torque head and gears; 12 months on hydraulic components and electronics. Die wear is not covered – they are consumables.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: How long does it take to make a connection with an automated iron roughneck?
From the time the mousehole or elevator positions the pipe to fully made‑up torque: 12‑18 seconds for drill pipe, 25‑35 seconds for casing (slower spinner due to larger diameter). Manual tongs typically take 45‑60 seconds per connection.

Q2: Can your iron roughneck be used with both drill pipe and casing on the same rig?
Yes – by swapping the die cartridges and adjusting the jaw stroke. The IR‑80 can handle 3‑1/2" drill pipe up to 9‑5/8" casing. Die change takes 2 minutes. However, for frequent changes, many operators buy a second roughneck or separate jaw sets.

Q3: Does the system record torque turn data automatically?
Yes. The PLC logs each connection’s peak torque, final turns, spin time, and a timestamp. Data can be exported to a USB drive, printed, or sent wirelessly (optional) to a central server. You can also print a job report at the end of the shift.

Q4: What happens if the roughneck loses hydraulic pressure during torque?
The torque head brakes are spring‑applied, pressure‑released. If pressure drops below a setpoint, the brakes automatically lock. The jaws will not rotate, and the pipe will not spin. The operator must manually release the brakes after pressure is restored.

Q5: Can I operate the roughneck from the driller’s cabin instead of the floor?
Yes – we offer a remote console that mounts in the driller’s cabin. The operator can see the connection via a camera. Many offshore rigs use this configuration to completely remove floor personnel during tripping.

Q6: Do you offer an electric version for cold climates?
Absolutely. Our electric iron roughneck uses servo motors and gearboxes – no hydraulic fluid to thicken or freeze. It starts reliably at -40°C. The electric version is also quieter and has no leak potential.

Q7: How often do the dies need to be replaced?
Die life depends on pipe condition and how often you reverse torque (break out). Typically 5,000‑10,000 connections. We supply replacement dies in packs of 6 (full set for jaw).

Q8: Can the roughneck be retrofitted to a rig that has no existing hydraulic power unit?
Yes – we can supply a standalone hydraulic power unit (electric or diesel driven) sized for the roughneck. For the electric version, only a 480V / 60Hz or 380V / 50Hz power connection is needed.

Q9: What is the typical delivery time?
Standard IR‑50 or IR‑80: 45‑60 days. IR‑100 with ATEX: 90 days. Retrofit kits require an on‑site survey and then 60 days delivery.

Q10: How do I get a quote for an automated iron roughneck?
Email roughneck@sjpetro.com with:

  • Desired torque rating (ft‑lb)

  • Pipe size range (minimum and maximum O.D.)

  • Rig type (land/offshore, existing HPU or not)

  • Any special certification (ATEX, IECEx, ABS, DNV)
We will respond within 2 working days with a specification sheet and budget price. A firm quotation with drawings takes 5‑7 working days.
