Application Fields – Where Light Workover Equipment Excels
Mature Field Daily Workover
This is the bread and butter. Wells that have been producing for years need regular maintenance: paraffin scraping, pump changes, fishing, scale removal, valve replacements. These jobs take hours or days, not weeks. A light self‑propelled workover rig drives to the well, does the job, and drives to the next one – without mobilizing a crane or disassembling equipment.
Light Drilling for Infill or Shallow Well Development
When a field needs a new well but the target depth is less than 1,500 m, a full‑size drilling rig is overkill. Our XJ450, equipped with rotary table, swivel and drilling tools, can drill shallow development wells at a fraction of the cost of a conventional drilling rig.
Well Testing and Pump Checks
Routine surveillance operations do not require heavy equipment. Our XJ250 and XJ350 models are specifically designed for oil testing, fishing, and pump check operations, with compact, single‑drum drawworks and hydraulically raised masts.
Emergency Well Intervention
When a well suddenly stops producing due to a downhole failure, speed matters. A light workover rig that can drive at 60 km/h on public roads and rig up in a matter of hours is a critical asset for emergency response.
Urban and Environmentally Sensitive Areas
Limited wellsite footprint, noise restrictions, and disruption concerns call for compact, self‑contained equipment. Our light workover rigs have been deployed in urban areas and environmentally sensitive zones where larger rigs cannot operate.
Swampy / Low‑lying Fields
For wells located in muddy, low‑lying areas where wheeled vehicles struggle, we offer crawler‑based workover rigs (tractor hoists). These units have excellent off‑road power and can access wells that are unreachable by conventional truck‑mounted rigs.
Why Choose SJ PETROLEUM MACHINERY for Light Workover Equipment?
You have options. Here is why engineers and procurement teams worldwide choose us.
1. We are a wholly‑owned subsidiary of Sinopec. That means our rigs are tested and validated in China's toughest oilfields before they ever reach export markets. You are not our beta tester.
2. Over 80 years of continuous manufacturing. We started building drilling equipment in 1941. Our product lines now cover over 200 models across four major categories and 12 series, including drilling rigs, workover equipment, cementing units, fracturing units, offshore drilling and production systems, and high‑pressure fluid controls.
3. Proven global track record. Our equipment has been exported to more than 30 countries across North America, Russia, Central Asia, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Africa, with over 3,000 international trade transactions completed. Our XJ350s with American flag‑colored derricks are standing as a signature in the United States in Oklahoma, Texas, and Kansas.
4. Field‑proven powertrain with global parts support. Caterpillar diesel engines. Allison automatic transmissions. KOBELT disc brakes. These are components your mechanics know – and parts suppliers stock everywhere.
5. API certified for international procurement. API Q1, 4F, 7K, 8C – we meet the standards that tenders require.
6. Cost‑effective without cutting corners. Our light workover rigs typically cost 30–50% less than comparable Western brands – not because we compromise on quality, but because we control our own manufacturing, maintain lean operations, and do not charge a brand premium.
7. Complete IP ownership – no third‑party licensing. Our workover rig designs, control systems, and hydraulic systems are fully自主研发 (independent R&D) with complete intellectual property rights. No licensing fees. No technology transfer restrictions.
8. Fast delivery and responsive after‑sales support. Typical lead time for a light workover rig is 3–5 months. We provide onsite commissioning, remote diagnostics, spare parts supply, and comprehensive training for your crews.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q1: What is the typical depth range for light workover rigs?
Light workover rigs generally handle well depths from a few hundred meters up to roughly 3,000–4,500 m, depending on tubing or drill pipe diameter. Our XJ450, for example, reaches 4,500 m workover depth with 2‑7/8” drill pipe. For very shallow wells (under 2,000 m), the XJ150 or XJ250 is a better fit.
Q2: Can your light workover rigs also drill new wells?
Yes. Our XJ450 (and some other models) can be converted to a light drilling rig by adding a rotary table, swivel and drilling tools. Drilling depth is typically up to 1,500 m for 4‑1/2” drill pipe. This dual‑purpose capability is particularly valuable for infill drilling programs in mature fields.
Q3: What engines and transmissions do you use?
We use Caterpillar diesel engines (C9, C13, C15 models) with Allison automatic transmissions (4700 OFS, 4500 OFS, M5610AR). For some light models, we also offer the MC11.40‑60 engine (297 kW / 397 HP) coupled to an Allison 4500 OFS. All are globally supported.
Q4: Are your light workover rigs API certified?
Yes. Our workover rigs are designed and manufactured in accordance with API Spec Q1, 4F, 7K, and 8C. Rotary tables meet API 7K standards. We can also provide ABS, DNV, or CCS certification for offshore applications upon request.
Q5: How fast can your light workover rig travel between wells?
Maximum travel speed is 60 km/h for some models (XJ250), though we recommend a safe operating limit of 45 km/h for stability. The XJ350 and XJ450 have a max travel speed of 45 km/h.
Q6: What is the rig‑up time for a light workover rig on a new wellsite?
Because all systems are pre‑mounted on the carrier, typical rig‑up time is 2–4 hours from arrival to mast erection and readiness for operation. Rig‑down is similarly quick. This contrasts with conventional workover rigs that can take a full day or more.
Q7: Do you offer cold‑weather versions of your light workover rigs?
Absolutely. Our XJ450 low‑temperature workover and drilling rig uses low‑temperature materials and can perform workover operations at –45 °C with good cold and wind resistance. We have supplied these rigs to Russian operators for arctic field work.
Q8: What about no‑guyline configurations for tight locations?
Yes. The technology for rigs without guylines is suitable for light duty workover rigs including XJ150, XJ250, XJ350 and XJ450. These configurations are ideal for urban wells, desert locations, marsh areas, and anywhere space is limited.
Q9: Do you provide training for our crews?
Yes. We offer comprehensive training packages covering:
-
Classroom instruction on rig systems and controls
-
Onsite commissioning and hands‑on coaching
-
Maintenance and troubleshooting courses
-
Remote refresher training
All documentation is provided in English (or your preferred language) with detailed technical diagrams.
