Applications – Where Our Hydraulic Workover Rig Excels
Hydraulic workover technology is deployed across a wide range of well intervention and remedial operations:
-
Workover and recompletion – pulling rods, tubing and pumps; fishing; scale removal; zone isolation – covering well depths from 1,000 m up to 9,000 m.
-
Shallow to medium drilling – when equipped with a rotary table, XJ550 and larger models can drill shallow and medium wells without a separate drilling spread.
-
Fishing and milling – retrieve broken drill pipe, dropped tubing, bit cones and other downhole debris.
-
Zone isolation and plug‑back – set bridge plugs and cement retainers for abandonment or remedial cementing.
-
Cluster well development – self‑propelled 10×8, 12×8 or 14×10 carriers allow rapid moves between closely spaced wellheads – no crane, no separate transport.
-
Remote exploration – self‑propelled carriers access locations with poor roads and no crane support.
-
Arctic campaigns (-45 °C) – proven in Russia’s Orenburg field with delivered cold‑weather drilling rigs.
-
Desert development (55 °C+) – sand‑sealed components, oversized cooling and reinforced chassis for Middle Eastern operations.
Product Types – Hydraulic Workover Rig Configurations
We offer hydraulic workover rigs in standard depth ratings, each available with optional drilling capability, arctic/desert packages and custom carrier configurations.
1. Light Hydraulic Workover Rig (XJ250 – XJ350)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) – Hydraulic Workover Rig
Q1: What is the difference between a hydraulic workover rig and a conventional workover rig?
A: A conventional workover rig uses a drawworks, block‑and‑tackle system and mechanical or electric drive to hoist pipe. A hydraulic workover rig uses large hydraulic cylinders to lift and lower the pipe string. The hydraulic design delivers smoother operation, finer speed control, reduced shock loads on the tubular string, and often faster rig‑up times.
Q2: What is the difference between snubbing and hydraulic workover?
A: Snubbing is performed on live wells where surface pressure can push the pipe out of the hole – the pipe must be forced down until its weight balances the expulsion force. Hydraulic workover (HWO) is performed on dead wells (no surface pressure) using the same hydraulic rig technology. SJ Petro’s XJ series is designed primarily for HWO, but can be configured for snubbing with appropriate pressure control equipment.
Q3: What workover depths can your XJ series hydraulic workover rigs reach?
A: Our XJ series covers the full depth spectrum:
| Model | Workover Depth (2-7/8″ DP) |
|---|---|
| XJ250 | 3,200 m (10,500 ft) |
| XJ350 | 3,200 m (10,500 ft) |
| XJ450 | 4,500 m (14,760 ft) |
| XJ550 | 5,800 m (19,000 ft) |
| XJ650 | 7,000 m (23,000 ft) |
| XJ1000 | 8,000 m (26,200 ft) |
| XJ1200 | 9,000 m (29,500 ft) |
Maximum hook load ranges from 300 kN to 2,250 kN (67,440–505,800 lbs), with installed power from 235 HP to 1,300 HP.
Q4: Are your hydraulic workover rigs API certified?
A: Yes. Our XJ series is designed and manufactured in accordance with API Spec 4F, 7K, 8C and relevant national standards. API monogram is available upon request. For international tenders, we provide complete certification packages including material test reports, hydrostatic certificates, NDT reports and API data sheets.
Q5: Can your hydraulic workover rigs be used for drilling operations?
A: Yes. XJ550, XJ650, XJ1000 and XJ1200 can perform drilling operations for medium and shallow wells when equipped with a rotary table and drilling line. These are true 2‑in‑1 machines – one rig for workover and drilling.
Q6: What is the lead time for a hydraulic workover rig?
A: Standard lead times from order confirmation:
-
XJ250–XJ350 (standard configuration): 4–5 months
-
XJ450–XJ550 (standard configuration): 5–6 months
-
XJ650–XJ1200 (standard configuration): 6–8 months
-
Custom builds (arctic, desert, drilling package): 8–10 months
Expedited delivery may be available – contact our sales team.
Q7: Do you offer financing or leasing for hydraulic workover rigs?
A: Yes. For qualified buyers, we offer direct financing through partner banks (terms up to 5 years), operating leases (low monthly payments) and milestone payment plans (30/40/30). Contact our sales team for a lease proposal.
Q8: What is the warranty on a hydraulic workover rig?
A: 12 months after commissioning or 18 months after shipment – whichever occurs first. The warranty covers manufacturing defects on all components (carrier, engine, transmission, drawworks, mast, hydraulic system, control system). Wear parts are not covered but are available as spares. Extended warranty (up to 5 years) is available for an additional fee.
Q9: Do you provide operator training for hydraulic workover rigs?
A: Yes. For every rig purchase, we include 1–2 weeks of on‑site training during commissioning, covering rig operation, maintenance, safety protocols, hydraulic system operation and emergency procedures. Digital manuals, video tutorials and remote support are also provided.
Q10: Can your hydraulic workover rigs operate in extreme cold (-45 °C) or extreme heat (55 °C+)?
A: Yes. We offer specialised packages for extreme environments:
-
Arctic package (-45 °C) – heated control cabins, low‑temperature hydraulic fluids (pour point below -55 °C), engine block heaters, battery warmers, heated air intakes for pneumatic systems, insulated hydraulic lines. Proven in Russia’s Orenburg field.
-
Desert package (55 °C+) – oversized cooling systems (radiators and heat exchangers), sand‑sealed electrical enclosures, dust filtration on air intakes, corrosion‑resistant coatings, reinforced chassis for rough terrain.
Q11: What safety features are included on your hydraulic workover rigs?
A: Our hydraulic workover rigs include: fail‑safe hydraulic valves (close on loss of power), emergency stop buttons at multiple locations, automatic mast lock systems, anti‑torque release device, multiple braking systems (primary and auxiliary), and wind speed monitoring systems with automated alarms.
Q12: How fast does the hydraulic workover rig travel on roads?
A: Maximum travel speed is 45 km/h (28 mph) for all XJ series hydraulic workover rigs. The self‑propelled carrier eliminates the need for lowboy trailers and separate tractors.
Q13: How long does it take to rig up a hydraulic workover rig on a new location?
A: With a trained crew of 4–5 people, typical rig‑up time is 4–6 hours. This includes driving onto the pad, leveling with hydraulic jacks, raising the mast hydraulically, connecting power and control lines, and performing a function test. No crane is required for any part of the rig‑up process.
Q14: Do you supply downhole workover tools as part of the hydraulic workover system?
A: Yes. Through our subsidiary SJS Ltd. and our extensive supply network, we provide a full range of downhole workover tools including overshots, fishing spears, taper mills, junk mills, section mills, bridge plugs (API 11D1 V3 certified), cement retainers and retrievable packers. We also supply bumper jars, hydraulic jars, safety joints and lead impression blocks.
Q15: Can I see a hydraulic workover rig in operation before purchasing?
A: Yes. We welcome customer visits to our factory in Jingzhou, China, where you can inspect hydraulic workover rigs under construction and witness load testing. For international customers, we can arrange visits to active field sites in the Middle East, South America, Western Africa, Indonesia or Russia where XJ series rigs are currently operating.
