Applications – Where Heavy Duty Workover Rigs Are Essential
| Application | Why Heavy Duty Required |
|---|---|
| Deep well fishing (below 18,000 ft) | Heavy fish (e.g., parted drill collars) may weigh 50,000+ lbs. Standard rig lacks margin. |
| Stuck packer retrieval | Mechanical or swell packers can require 200,000+ lbs pull to unseat. |
| Casing pulling for abandonment | Pulling 9-5/8" or 13-3/8" casing – often cemented – needs high sustained load. |
| Milling operations with heavy bottom hole assembly | BHA weight + friction can exceed 150k lbs before you even start pulling. |
| Deep well stimulation prep (acidizing, fracturing) | Heavy treatment strings and packers need high pull capacity. |
| Sidetracking from existing well | Light drilling requires heavy mast and drawworks to handle drill pipe and shock loads. |
| Offshore platform heavy intervention | Some platforms have deep, high-pressure wells. Our HD rigs (corrosion-protected) are used. |
Product Types – Heavy Duty Workover Rig Configurations
We offer the heavy duty platform in two mounting options and two drive options:
| Configuration | Hook Load Range | Mounting | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| SJW-250/300/350/400HD Skid | 250k–400k lbs | Heavy skid (no truck) | Fixed pads, large operators, P&A campaigns |
| SJW-250/300HD Trailer | 250k–300k lbs | Hydraulic gooseneck trailer | Operators who move between deep wells (road permits required) |
Drive options:
-
Hydraulic – Standard for all HD models. Diesel engine (500–1,200 HP depending on model).
-
Electric – Available up to 250k lbs only. Above 250k, electric drive becomes impractical (very large VFD and switchgear).
Snubbing option – Available on all HD models. Adds 200k–400k lbs pull/push, 10k–15k psi.
Why Choose SJ Petro for Your Heavy Duty Workover Rig?
1. We Don’t Over-Rate Our Rigs
Some manufacturers claim "300,000 lbs” but de-rate in fine print for continuous use. Our ratings are continuous. We publish load test videos.
2. Built for the Long Pull
Our heavy duty rigs have oversized coolers (hydraulic oil and engine). You can pull at 80% of rated load for hours without overheating – critical for fishing or casing pulling.
3. Reinforced Everything
From mast pins (2.5" diameter vs standard 1.75") to wireline sheaves (roller bearings vs bronze bushings), every component is upgraded.
4. Field Support for Heavy Jobs
When you are stuck on a deep well, we can send a heavy duty specialist engineer within 5 days. Premium support includes onsite troubleshooting for fishing jobs.
5. Proven Track Record
Over 40 heavy duty workover rigs delivered since 2015. Clients include major NOCs in the Middle East and Asia for deep gas wells. References available.
6. Financing for Large Capital Equipment
Heavy duty rigs cost $900k–$2.2M. We offer leasing and structured payments. Ask about our "rig sharing” program for operators who need heavy capacity only occasionally.
7. 15-Year Spares Commitment – Even for Heavy Duty Components
We stock mast pins, wireline sheaves, hydraulic pump cartridges for heavy duty models. No obsolescence.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q1: When do I really need a heavy duty workover rig instead of a standard rig?
If your well depth exceeds 15,000 ft with 3-1/2" tubing, you are already close to 150k lbs string weight. Add stuck packer (often requires double the string weight to unseat) and you exceed standard rig capacity. Also, any casing pulling job below 10,000 ft typically needs 200k+ lbs.
Q2: What is the heaviest pull you have ever done with your rig?
On a client site in Central Asia, an SJW-300HD pulled 410,000 lbs (peak, static) to retrieve a stuck packer at 16,500 ft. The rig’s mast deflected 3 inches – within design. We do not recommend exceeding rated load, but the safety margin handled it.
Q3: Can a heavy duty workover rig drill a new well?
Yes, light drilling for top hole or sidetracking. With optional top drive and mud pumps (add-on), you can drill to moderate depths. For full new wells, we recommend a dedicated drilling rig.
Q4: How much does a heavy duty workover rig cost?
Indicative FOB China:
-
SJW-250HD: $900,000 – $1,200,000
-
SJW-300HD: $1,300,000 – $1,700,000
-
SJW-400HD: $1,800,000 – $2,200,000
Price depends on snubbing, pipe handling automation, and spares kit. Contact for firm quote.
Q5: What permits are needed to transport a heavy duty rig?
The mast retracted height (52–58 ft) and width (9.5–12 ft) exceed standard highway limits in most countries. Oversize/overweight permits required. Our logistics team can help with route planning. Some clients assemble the rig on site and never move it (skid version).
Q6: Do you offer rental heavy duty workover rigs?
Yes. We have three SJW-300HD units available for rent (dry rental only). Minimum 6 months. Rental includes one free annual inspection. Ask for current availability.
Q7: What is the typical fuel consumption of a heavy duty rig at full pull?
SJW-300HD at 300,000 lbs continuous pull: approximately 25–30 gallons per hour (diesel). At idle or light work, 5–8 GPH.
Q8: Can your heavy duty rig handle H2S (sour service)?
Yes. Specify NACE MR0175 at order. All wetted components (BOP, hydraulic lines to BOP, wireline, traveling block) are upgraded. Additional cost: 15–20%.
Q9: How many crew members are needed to operate a heavy duty rig?
Minimum 6 per shift: rig supervisor, driller, assistant driller, two floor hands, crane operator. For snubbing, add 2 snubbing hands. Larger crew than standard rig due to heavier tools and BOP handling.
Q10: Do you provide training for heavy duty operation?
Yes. Training includes: high-load calculations, overpull alarm settings, snubbing at high pressures, and emergency procedures for parted wireline. 5 days classroom + 5 days field. Heavy duty simulator available.
Q11: What is the lead time for a heavy duty workover rig?
Standard: 10–14 months from deposit. These are complex, custom-built machines. Expedited (8–9 months) possible for repeat configurations.
Q12: Can I get a demo or visit a working heavy duty rig before purchasing?
We can arrange a visit to an operating SJW-300HD in the Middle East (subject to client permission). Contact us to sign a non-disclosure agreement.
