Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: What is the difference between an iron roughneck and manual tongs?
Manual tongs require floor hands to spin and torque connections manually – high injury risk and inconsistent torque. An iron roughneck is fully hydraulic, remote controlled, and delivers precise, repeatable torque every time.

Q2: How accurate is the torque control?
±2% of setpoint at steady state. The system records actual torque vs. turns – you can verify every connection.

Q3: Can your iron roughneck handle both drill pipe and casing?
Yes – with interchangeable jaw kits. One base roughneck can be fitted with drill pipe jaws, casing jaws, or tubing jaws. Changeover takes <5 minutes.

Q4: What is the maximum pipe diameter your roughneck can handle?
With standard drill pipe jaws: up to 8‑1/2″ OD. With casing jaw kit: up to 13‑3/8″ OD (model dependent). Contact us for larger sizes.

Q5: How does the spinner work?
A hydraulic motor spins the upper pipe at high speed (up to 120 rpm) to run threads down. Once the shoulder contacts, the torque circuit engages to apply final make‑up torque.

Q6: Do you provide remote control?
Yes – standard wired pendant with 15m cable. Wireless option (50m range) available for all models.

Q7: What maintenance is required?
Daily: check hydraulic hoses, lubricate jaw pins. Weekly: inspect gripper inserts. Monthly: change hydraulic filters. Jaw grippers typically last 5,000‑10,000 connections.

Q8: Can your iron roughneck be retrofitted to my existing rig?
Yes – we design floor mounting brackets or rail systems to fit your rig’s layout. Site survey required.

Q9: What is the typical lead time?
SJ‑IR‑80D: 3‑4 months. SJ‑IR‑120D: 4‑5 months. SJ‑IR‑160D: 5‑6 months. Jaw kits: 4‑6 weeks.

Q10: Do you offer training?
Yes – 2 days on‑site training covering operation, jaw change, torque setpoint programming, and troubleshooting. Simulator available.

Q11: What safety features are included?
Emergency stop on pendant and console; jaw position sensors prevent accidental clamping; automatic pressure relief on overshoot; interlock with rig control system (optional).

Q12: How do I get a quote?
Provide: maximum torque required, pipe size range (OD and tool joint OD), rig type (land/offshore), and any environmental requirements (arctic, marine, desert). We will respond within 5 business days.
