Applications – Where Our Cold Region Equipment Excels
Cold region drilling equipment is essential for any operation where the temperature drops below freezing for extended periods:
-
Winter drilling campaigns in Siberia – Russia's primary oil and gas producing regions experience months of -30°C to -45°C
-
Northern Canada (Alberta, British Columbia, Northwest Territories) – winter access roads limit drilling to cold months
-
Alaska (North Slope) – Prudhoe Bay and surrounding fields – extended winter drilling seasons
-
Norway / Norwegian Sea – cold offshore environment with ice and freezing spray
-
Kazakhstan (northern regions) – Tengiz, Karachaganak – cold continental winters
-
Mongolia – desert-steppe winters dropping below -40°C
-
Northern China (Inner Mongolia, Heilongjiang, Xinjiang) – major oilfields requiring winter drilling
-
High-altitude regions – Andes, Himalayas – year-round cold at elevation
Typical operations in cold regions:
-
Conventional vertical and directional drilling
-
Sour gas (H₂S) well development (low-temperature steel is also H₂S-resistant in many cases)
-
Workover and recompletions during winter access windows
-
Paraffin removal and sand cleanout using coiled tubing
-
Fracturing in sub-zero conditions
Why Choose SJ Petro for Cold Region Drilling Equipment?
Because we don't guess about cold-weather performance. We prove it.
| Your Concern | SJ Petro's Answer |
|---|---|
| "Everyone claims their equipment is 'cold-rated.' How do I know yours actually works?” | We've delivered working rigs to Siberia, Canada, and Kazakhstan. Ask for references – we'll connect you with operators running our equipment at -45°C. |
| *"What happens if a seal fails at -40°C?”* | All our seals are low-temperature elastomers. We've tested them. They don't become brittle. And we stock replacement cold-weather seals in our spare parts inventory. |
| "I need Russian certification. Do you have it?” | Yes. Our cold region equipment complies with GOST 12.2.141-99 and other Russian standards. We've done the paperwork many times. |
| "We operate on a short winter road window. Rig-up needs to be fast.” | Our modular and trailer-mounted cold region rigs are designed for rapid winter rig-up. Pre-wired, pre-piped, with heated enclosures that go up quickly. |
| "What if we need maintenance in the middle of a blizzard?” | Our equipment is designed for serviceability in cold conditions – accessible components, no need to work bare-handed in -30°C. And we provide remote support. |

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q1: What's the difference between "cold region" and "Arctic" drilling equipment?
A: For practical purposes, very little. We use the term "cold region" to cover all freezing environments – including northern Canada, Siberia, Alaska, Scandinavia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and high-altitude regions. The core engineering is the same: low-temperature steel, heated enclosures, winterized hydraulics, and cold-start systems. Arctic equipment typically requires additional features for polar darkness, extreme wind, and lower minimum temperatures (sometimes -50°C to -60°C). Our Arctic package goes to -45°C operating, -60°C storage – we can discuss specific requirements.
Q2: What is the coldest temperature your equipment has actually operated at?
A: Our coldest sustained operation has been -45°C ambient in Siberia, with occasional dips to -48°C during extreme cold snaps. The rig continued drilling (with some extra heater attention). For storage, our equipment has endured -55°C without damage.
Q3: Do I need a fully enclosed drilling floor, or can I get by with just heating key components?
A: For safety and crew productivity, we strongly recommend a fully enclosed, heated drilling floor when temperatures drop below -20°C. Here's why:
-
Your crew cannot work effectively (or safely) in extreme cold – frostbite risk, reduced dexterity
-
Rotary table, slips, and tongs need to stay free of ice
-
Even "cold-rated" components perform better when not frozen
For occasional cold snaps or milder cold regions (e.g., -10°C to -20°C), partial winterization may suffice. Tell us your lowest expected temperature and duration – we'll recommend the right level.
Q4: Can I retrofit winterization to my existing standard drilling rig?
A: Possibly – but not always cost-effective. Retrofitting typically requires:
-
Replacing critical steel components (mast, substructure) if original steel is not low-temperature rated
-
Adding enclosures and heaters to drill floor, equipment shelters
-
Replacing hydraulic seals, hoses, and fluids
-
Adding cold-start systems to engines
In many cases, the cost of retrofitting an old rig approaches the cost of a new winterized rig – and you still have old components. We can evaluate your existing rig and provide a retrofit feasibility study.
Q5: What's your lead time for a cold region drilling rig?
A: Winterized ZJ-series rigs: 6–8 months after order confirmation. Custom configurations or extreme low-temperature packages (below -45°C) may add 2–3 months. We recommend ordering in spring or summer to have the rig ready for winter drilling season.
Q6: Do your cold region rigs meet API standards or only GOST?
A: Both. Our equipment is designed and manufactured to API 4F, 7K, and 8C (the relevant drilling equipment standards) as our baseline. For Russian customers, we add compliance with GOST 12.2.141-99 and other applicable Russian standards. For Canadian or Alaskan customers, we meet local regulatory requirements (e.g., CSA for Canada).
Q7: What's included in your cold region spare parts kit?
A: We recommend a winter-specific spare parts kit including:
-
Spare low-temperature hydraulic seals and O-rings (full set)
-
Spare heater elements for all electrical heaters
-
Spare thermostats and temperature sensors
-
Extra diesel fuel treatment (anti-gel)
-
Hydraulic fluid top-up (low-temperature grade)
-
Air dryer desiccant cartridges
-
Common electrical relays and fuses for heater circuits
We'll provide a detailed parts list with your quotation.
Q8: Can you supply cold region equipment for offshore / platform use?
A: Yes. Offshore cold region (e.g., Norwegian Sea, Sakhalin, North Slope offshore) requires additional corrosion protection and different certification (DNV, ABS). We can build to those requirements. Lead time will be longer. Contact us with your offshore specification.
